Notes: Biotic and Abiotic Factors

Definitions Ecology = The study of interactions between organisms and their environment

Definitions Ecology = The study of interactions between organisms and their environment Environment = An organism’s surroundings, including living and non-living factors

Definitions Ecology = The study of interactions between organisms and their environment Environment = An organism’s surroundings, including living and non-living factors Habitat = The area inhabited by a particular species

Biotic and Abiotic Factors Biotic factors = All the living organisms that are part of an environment

Biotic and Abiotic Factors Biotic factors = All the living organisms that are part of an environment Abiotic factors = Non-living chemical and physical factors in the environment (for example: temperature, light, water, and nutrients)

Output activity (pg 5) Make 2 columns, labeled “biotic” and “abiotic” List at least 5 biotic and 5 abiotic factors that affect you daily

Limiting factors (pg 4) Limiting factor = The biotic or abiotic factor that limits the survival and productivity of an organism

Example: Limiting factors for plants Limiting factor = The biotic or abiotic factor that limits the survival and productivity of an organism Example: Limiting factors for plants In the desert = Water In the rainforest = Light or herbivores
