Everything is Connected
Chapter 16 Section 1 Everything is Connected

Ecology: the study of the interactions of living organisms with one another and with their environment.

Abiotic: describes the nonliving part of the environment, including water, rocks, light, and temperature.

Biotic: describes living factors in the environment.

Population: a group of organisms of the same species that live in a specific geographical area.

Community: all of the populations of species that live in the same habitat and interact with each other.

Ecosystem: a community of organisms and their abiotic, or nonliving, environment.

Biome: a large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities.

Biosphere: the part of Earth where life exists.

A group of organisms of the same species living in the same area is a population.

The study of the interactions of living organisms with each other and the environment is ecology.

The nonliving part of the environment is abiotic.

All of the populations of species that live and interact in the same habitat is a community.

The part of Earth where life exists is the biosphere.

A community of organisms and their abiotic environment is an ecosystem.

Biotic describes the mammals, fish, birds, and plants that live in an environment.

An area where the climate determines the kinds of plants and animals that live there is called a biome.

The six levels of environmental organization are biosphere, biome, ecosystem, community, population, and individual.

Water is abiotic.
