 Local Area:___________  Divide paper in two columns ◦ Living Things ◦ Local Conditions

 What is an ecosystem?  How many different types of ecosystems can you identify?  How do the abiotic and biotic parts of an ecosystem differ?  In what different ways do living and non-living things interact in ecosystems?  How do food, energy, and nutrients move through an ecosystem?  In what ways do natural events and human activities cause changes in ecosystems?

 Can be described by the types of organisms and the conditions found there.  Include abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) things.  Can be large or small

 With a partner, generate a list of things that all living things must have for survival.

 Ocean  Forest  Pond  Arctic  What others can you think of?

 Read page 10-12 and complete the chart on each type of ecosystem. EcosystemFloraFaunaAbiotic conditions 1.Oceans 2.Forest 3.Pond 4. Arctic

 The non-living parts of the environment  The upper and lower limits in which an organism can survive is called the organism’s range of tolerance  Examples (Make notes on each p.16 -17) ◦ Intensity of sunlight ◦ Temperature ◦ Soil ◦ Air and wind ◦ Water

 VIDEO VIDEO  The living parts of the environment  Includes MANY species of organisms  Species ◦ A group of organisms that can reproduce to produce similar, fertile organisms

Individual Population Community Ecosystem

 Habitat: the organism’s address; where does it live?  Ex. A moose’s habitat is the boreal forest.

 Niche: the organism’s job; what role does the organism play in its environment. It includes: ◦ where it lives ◦ how it obtains food ◦ how it affects its environment  Ex. A moose lives in the boreal forest, it is a herbivore (plant eater), it provides a home for parasites and it provides food for coyotes.

 Complete the dichotomous key

 Biotic - abiotic
