Unit 1: Introduction to Geographic Studies

Geography “the study of where people, places, and things are located… ….the ways different things relate to each other at specific places… ….and the ways places are connected”

The study of Geography is focused around five themes: 1. Location 2. Place 3. Human-Environment Interaction 4. Movement 5. Regions

1. Location (Two Types) A. Absolute Location (Exact position on the globe) Uses latitude (parallels) and longitude (meridians)

B. Relative Location Where a location is in relation to other places

2. Place A collection of physical and human features that distinguish it from other areas

3. Human-Environment Interaction How have/do humans affect their environment in a given area?

4. Movement How people, goods, and ideas will move in and out of different locations

5. Regions A group of places that share common characteristics
