1 5 Themes of Geography

2 Relationships Location Place Region Movement
These are the 5 themes of geography. They all help to represent the areas we research. When we will be learning about different countries this year we will discuss these themes for each.

3 Relationships Relationship with the human population and the environment! Example: Use of resources Relationships is evaluating the relationship between the human population and their environment. For example, when we cut down trees we are using the environment.

4 What the location is near! Example: Canada close to North America
Relative location What the location is near! Example: Canada close to North America Relative location is what that specific location is near. For example Canada is near North America or you are near the person sitting next to you.

5 The exact location. Example: 32˚N, 45˚S
absolute location The exact location. Example: 32˚N, 45˚S Absolute location is the exact location of something. For example using longitude and latitude something is 32 degrees North and 45 degrees South.

6 Place (physical characteristics)
Geographic features Example: Mountains, Rivers, and Deserts The physical characteristics of a place include mountains, rivers, deserts, etc.

7 Place (human characteristics)
Culture and beliefs of population. Example: Education and religion Human characteristics are the culture and the beliefs of the population in that specific area. For example if the population is very educated or if there is a specific religion that a majority of the population believes.

8 Areas with similar characteristics Example: Language
region Areas with similar characteristics Example: Language Region is areas with similar characteristics. For example North America and a majority of Canada share English as a language.

9 Interaction with other countries Example: Immigration and population
movement Interaction with other countries Example: Immigration and population Movement is interaction with other countries. Such as immigration and populations. A good example of movement is buying goods from other countries.
