What are Muckrakers? Muckrakers are journalists who played a very important role in helping people during the Progressive Era. Today,they are called investigative reporters.During the Progressive Era,they were called muckrakers.

How Muckrakers Got their Name Muckrakers got their name because they raked up the muck-and dirt that was occurring against the people.They reported on many social issues and problems such as poverty,crime.

What Did Muckrakers Write About? They reported on many problems such as poverty, crime racism, and inequality of women They also reported on child labor,tenement life, and factory conditions.

Who was Jacob Riss? Jacob Riss was a photojournalists. Many pictures appeared in his book How the other Half Lives

Who was Ida Tarbell? She wrote a series of articles about corruption at standard Oil Company. Her articles led to a federal investigation of the company. The company was a monopoly that bribed business executives and city officials.

Who was Upton Sinclair? He played an important role in bringing about reform in the meatpacking industry. In his book”the jungle”he described the unclean conditions in the meatpacking factories. As a result, on June 30,1906 the food and Drug Act was signed into law to ensure safe food for the public.

Reforms and Laws for Change In conclusion muckrakers were very important journalists who brought about great reforms for the public. Their efforts are still impacting us today because they insured batter practices in business. New laws were passed to make sure these illegal practices never happen again.
