What's in Tobacco Nicotine: Is a drug that speeds up the heartbeat and affects the central nervous system. Carbon Monoxide: This is a poisonous, odorless gas produced when tobacco burns. (also an ingredient in car and truck exhaust.) Tar: is a thick, oily, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns.

Nicotine and Addiction Nicotine is a powerfully addictive drug! What is ADDICTION????? Addiction: is the body’s physical or mental need for a drug or other substance. Causes the users to depend on the substance in order to feel good. Once addicted quitting becomes extremely difficult. People who try to break their nicotine addiction may experience shakiness, headache, nervousness, and sleeping problems.

How Tobacco Harms The body Just one puff releases harmful chemicals into the mouth, throat, and lungs. Long Term: heart disease, stroke emphysema (breakdown of lung tissue cancer — including lung, throat, stomach, and bladder cancer. increased risk of infections like bronchitis and pneumonia Short Term: yellow teeth smelly clothes more colds and coughs difficulty keeping up with friends when playing sports empty wallet — cigarettes and tobacco products are very expensive!

Emphysema Is a disease that occurs when the tiny air sacs in the lungs lose their elasticity, or ability to stretch This reduces the amount of oxygen passing from the lungs into the blood. Breathing becomes more difficult for the smoker.

Cigarettes are not the only delivery system for tobacco. Other Forms of Tobacco Cigarettes are not the only delivery system for tobacco. Cigars Pipes Smokeless tobacco- Chewed or inhaled.

Emphysema Destroys the air sacs of the lungs (alveoli) Alveoli lose elasticity and absorb less oxygen More breaths needed to get oxygen People with emphysema use 80% of their energy just to breathe in comparison to the normal 5%.

Straw Breathing Activity Any type of smoking affects your breathing. To see how your lungs feel when you smoke, place a straw in your mouth, hold your nose, breathe only through the straw, and run in place for one minute.
