GLOBAL CLASSROOMS: Position Papers December 3rd, 2012

Today’s Agenda: Position papers Orphans Good websites

POSITION PAPERS!!

What is a position paper? 1 to 1.5 pages in length Usually about 600 words Gives facts about your country and the topic Includes proposals for resolutions, which are solutions your country think should be done in the future. Resolutions are actions for ALL countries, not just your own country

Title In the top left hand corner: Committee: (UNEP or UNICEF) Topic: (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) Country: (Your full country name) Delegate: (Your names)

INTRODUCTION Includes 1. Introduction to the topic (Orphans and Vulnerable Children). 2. Also include how the issue affects your country.

Also Include: PAST ACTIONS 3. Your country's national past policies/actions what happened? why? 4. Your country's international past policies/actions Resolutions, agreements, conventions, etc. 5. Statistics and quotes to back up your country's position [you can also spread these throughout your position paper]

FUTURE 7. What your country believes should be done in the future: PROPOSAL What? Who? When? How? Give details! 8. CONCLUSION: What your country would like to see accomplished in the committee's resolution tie it back into the international issue

Before you start writing, you need to know: What’s your country’s position on the topic? WHY? what’s the history? laws/policies/resolutions? country demographics? (GDP, population, import/export, etc) SO… WHAT’S YOUR PROPOSAL?? i.e. what do you want the committee’s resolution to be? WHAT should be done? WHO should be doing it? WHEN should it be done? HOW should it be done? - at least TWO statistics or quotes that support this proposal - at least TWO different ideas for what can be done towards this proposal

How to Cite a Source When you list a statistic or a quote add in an endnote or footnote and put the link to that source We will erase this in the final draft, but for now keep it in your paper

Position Paper Tips Keep it simple Make it official (Use appropriate vocabulary) Get organized (Each paragraph should have a topic sentence) Cite your sources (when you write a quote or statistic, put a footnote to cite where you found the information) Edit, edit, edit!!

Plagiarism is NOT allowed!! If your work is copied from a different source you will recieve a 0!!!! Use the skills we practiced with re-writing your work!!

Sample position paper Underline the topic sentences Label the introduction, past action, and future paragraphs Underline the statistics and quotes Highlight official words that you could use in your position paper
