2  When Atticus is discussing the case with his brother Jack he says, "Right. But do you think I could face my children otherwise? You know what's going to happen as well as I do" (Lee 88). Atticus's decision to defend Tom Robinson is not without potential consequences. In a well- organized essay explain why Atticus chooses to defend Tom Robinson and analyze the ramifications of his decision. Take into consideration his role as a parent and a community member. Cite specific evidence from the text to support your answer.

3  An Introduction Paragraph: A hook A thesis statement (last sentence)  Three Body Paragraphs You need 3 paragraphs that support your thesis You MUST use evidence from the book  A Conclusion Paragraph Bring your essay to a close, and tell me the “so what” of your essay.

4  Choose a quote for a hook: First sentence of paragraph Example: “Stand up for what is right even if you stand alone.” – Suzy Kassem  Sentences 2-3 Explain quote and relate/lead into thesis statement You can do this by giving a little background information to the book, time period, and trial.  Your Thesis Statement Last sentence of Introduction Answer the prompt:  What are the reasons Atticus chooses to defend Tom Robinson, and what are the potential consequences of that choice.  Might start it with the consequences, but state why Atticus still chooses to defend Tom Robinson.

5  TS: state the topic of your paragraph  CD: Quote, or FACT from the novel that supports your thesis and topic sentence. **Must have a citation  CM: OPINION – state how your CD supports your thesis.  CD: Quote, or FACT from the novel that supports your thesis and topic sentence. **Must have a citation  CM: OPINION – state how your CD supports your thesis.  CS: bring a close to your paragraph and if necessary, a transition to the next paragraph.

6  Bring a close to your paragraph.  Answer the “So What”  What has Atticus’s decision taught the readers?  DO NOT REPEAT KEY WORDS OR PHRASES FROM YOUR THESIS OR PAPER!!!

7 Your paper MUST have the following MLA requirements ( you will be graded on these):  One inch margins on all four sides of your paper.  Header – Last name page # (Holcombe 1) in the right top corner, on every page.  Heading – (only on the first page, left hand side Ron Weasley Miss Holcombe English 9, Period 3 6 November 2015  A title – interesting, centered, size 12, no bold, no underline, no italics  Double Spaced – you should have equal spacing throughout your ENTIRE essay, including your heading.  FONT: Times New Roman, size 12

9  Write your essay in present tense Ex: Curley’s wife is lonely because she does not have anyone to talk to.  Basic Essay Rules The basic essay rules can be found on my website  NO first or second person: (I, me, my, we, us, our, you, your, yours). In other words, DO NOT say “I believe”  No Repetition

13  Use the rubric to help you write your first draft. A copy of the rubric will be passed out to you in class and can also be found on my classroom website.  Use the basic essay rules when writing your first draft. This can also be found on my website.

14 MLA Format

15  The very first page should have their last name along with the number 1. Each page after that should have their last name with the next consecutive number.  The header spacing should be: ½ an inch down from the top of the paper and 1 inch in from the right of the paper. If it is correct put a check mark next to the header.

16 On the left hand side there should be 4 items listed: Student Name Miss Holcombe English 11, Period 1 Date (1 March 2013) These should be: 1 inch down from the top of the page 1 inch in from the left hand side of the page. Double spaced. If it is correct put a check mark next to the information.

17  There should be a title after the personal information. It should be centered and capitalized.  There should only be 1 space between the title and the beginning of the essay.  If it is correct put a check mark next to the title.

18 1) Turn to the last page of their paper. 2) This page should have the header still on it (Last name and page number). 3) The title Works Cited should be about an inch from the top of the paper. (The word “Page” should not be in the title) 4) The entire page should be evenly double spaced…meaning that there are no triple spaces anywhere! If it is correct put a check mark next to the title Works Cited. 5) To Kill a Mockingbird should be the source that is cited.

19 1) Look at the content on the page. 2) There should be NO bullet points or numbers 3) If they used more than To Kill a Mockingbird as a source, the entire page should be alphabetized based on the first letter of each entry. 4) The first line of each entry should be 1 inch in from the left side of the paper. 5) The second (and so forth) lines for each entry should be 1 ½ inches in from the left side of the paper. If it is correct put a check mark next to the first citation (in the margin).
