1 MSUMUN Deadline: March 4th, 2016
MUN Position Papers MSUMUN Deadline: March 4th, 2016 This is colorful.

2 What is a Position Paper?
A position paper summarises your representative's perspective on your committee topics. It will show the Chairs that you have done your research and help prepare you for committee.

3 Position Paper Formatting: Heading
In the left hand corner of the page should be: Delegate: Your Name Committee: Committee Title Country/Person Topic: I. _________ This should precede every topic you cover. Your heading should also include (if possible) the official seal of your country.

4 Position Paper Formatting: Body Paragraph
Your body paragraph should include: 1. Short background on the topics 2. Your country's history regarding the topic 3. Your stance towards the topic (and who your allies are in this committee) 4. Past international actions and UN [or other] solutions to the topic 5. What actions your country/person wishes to take regarding the topics. Each topic should be roughly 250 words and all information should be cited in a footnote with APA/MLA citation (Use Easybib or Knightcite)

5 Example: Delegate: Sonalee Joshi
Committee: The United Nations Peace Building Commission Country: The Russian Federation Topic II: The Situation in Sierra Leone The conflict in Sierra Leone has continued for quite some time and has been particularly troubling due to the military use of children. Through a series of rebellions against Sierra Leone’s government, and the use of blood diamonds to fuel the war, Sierra Leone has been left in a state of destitution and requires immediate aid. The Federation of Russia believes that the countries of the Peace Building Committee must combine full efforts to eradicate these issues. Russia believes that it is in the best interests of the country for the Committee to thoroughly assess the government of Sierra Leone and implement heavy restrictions to prevent the transfer of blood diamonds and child exploitation for military purposes. Military intervention from the nations in the United Nations should be considered, and any means of pressure for the reform of the government is the primary focus. The Libyan crisis also fortifies the corruption and chaos in Sierra Leone and is increasingly harmful to the region. There must be pressure from the United Nations on the government of Sierra Leone to create and enforce crucial laws against the use of children for military purposes, and there must be direct assessments by the UN itself on the actions of the government.

6 Tips: Keep a separate document with all of the research you do in a bulleted list so it is easy to access. A position paper is a great introduction for any committee. Do not plagiarize. Your chairs will be able to tell and it could cost you an award.
