Les adjectifs Français 1

1. Les adjectifs or “adjectives” are used to… Describe nouns and pronouns. Ex. - The dog is small. He is small. The dog is big. She is big.

2. Adjectives that modify masculine nouns must be in… masculine form. Ex. - Xavier est blond. Le garçon est intelligent.

3. Adjectives that modify feminine nouns must be in… feminine form. Ex. - Alice est blonde. La fille est intelligente.

*This is called noun-adjective agreement or l’accord.

4. In written French, feminine adjectives are usually formed as follows… Masculine Feminine Adjective + e → Adjective Ex. – blond + e → blonde intelligent + e → intelligente

5. Exception: If the masculine adjective already ends in –e… The feminine form will be the same. Ex. – Le garçon est stupide. La fille est stupide.

6. Pronunciation: A. Masculine…Don’t pronounce final consonant (unless the word ends in e.) B. Feminine…Pronounce final consonant because e will usually follow it. Masc. Fem. Blond → Blonde Petit → Petite

7. Position: Unlike English adjectives, many French adjectives… Follow the noun that they modify. Ex. – Alain est un garçon américain. La fille brune est française.

8. To make a plural adjective… Just add –s to end. Ex. – Il est grand. Ils sont grands. Elle est grande. Elles sont grandes. Do nothing, if the adjective already ends in –s.
