2 Le Genre All nouns have gender: either feminine or masculine—whether they are animate or inanimate objects, people or things. 3 Les Articles Définis All nouns are preceded by an article (it’s a rule). Usually that article is a definite article. All definite articles translate as “the” in English. There are three singular forms of definite articles—masculine, feminine and one before a vowel sound. – le garçon(‘le’ for masculine) – la fille(‘la’ for feminine) – l’éléphant(‘l’’ for words that start with a, e, i, o, u, h or y) All nouns are preceded by an article (it’s a rule). 8 Gender Markers Every noun has gender, but not every word is easily discernible. You usually can’t tell the gender of a noun by looking at it. We look for gender markers, like the articles which precede the noun.
