Part 2: More than just colours & locations…

Latitude and Longitude The earth is divided into imaginary lines called latitude and longitude.

How They are Measured… Latitude and longitude are measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds…as in angles not heat!

Degrees = o; Minutes = ‘; Seconds = “ How They are Measured… Latitude and longitude are measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds…as in angles not heat! Degrees = o; Minutes = ‘; Seconds = “ You are here John Harrison

Latitude Latitude lines circle the earth like a series of belts. They are labelled “North” and “South”. They are responsible for climate. Latitude

Where is 0 degree Latitude? The equator is 0 degree latitude. It is an imaginary belt that runs halfway point between the North Pole and the South Pole, & divides the earth into two hemispheres. Equator

Other Lines of Latitude? Arctic Circle at 66.5°N Antarctic Circle at 66.5°S Tropic of Cancer at 23.5°N Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5°S Arctic Circle at 66.5°N Antarctic Circle at 66.5°S

Longitude Longitude lines run up & down like telephone poles circling the earth. They are labelled “East” and “West”. They are responsible for time zones. Longitude

Where is 0 degree? The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. This imaginary line runs through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, western Africa, and Antarctica.

International Dateline? The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. On the other side of the earth (the other half of the circle) is the International Dateline (IDL). It separates days: the east is one day ahead of the west.

THE EARTH GRID

Hemispheres By using the equator and prime meridian, we can divide the world into four hemispheres, north, south, east, and west.
