Information on Availability of Healthcare and Mental Health Services Medical Care for a transferring service member is always one of the top 5 concern. This is a fact whether they are single or married. This afternoon I plan on providing a brief overview on what some of these service consist of, where and how you may connect. ELEMENT 39 PG. 193

PURPOSE To inform the service member of the health care and mental health care options available to them and their family.

MEDICAL EVALUATION Required for transitioning service members Medical screening should start no later than 180 days prior to date of separation 2 Purposes: - Identify ongoing conditions - Making a disability claim with the VA Additionally, signing up with the registries that apply to your deployments is highly recommended. This is to document location(s) as they may be a key factor to potential future conditions. For example, kidney cancer which is a presumptive condition associated with Vietnam Era ; boots on the ground. Another one: Open Burn Pit Registry – OIF/OEF, Operation Desert Storm, etc.

Mental Health Military families and service members Active Duty can self-refer Family members first 8 visits DO NOT require preauthorization if treatment is provided within the TriCare network. Facilities offer clinical and non-clinical services Available services for family members can be arranged through Military One Source,

DOD InTRANSITION PROGRAM Confidential coaching program Provides information on community resource Will assist with making an appointment in your local area This is a free program available to veterans and active duty. Essential part of this program is the warm hand off upon transition, i.e.: retirement, discharge, deployment, PCS, etc. This program is available to all veterans regardless of discharge characterization.

All service members seen by a Behavioral Health Provider within one year of separation of active duty will automatically be enrolled in the In Transition Program and contacted by a coach. The TSM can decline services at anytime. Including during the initial contact by the coach.

Veterans Affairs Will treat service members with a Dishonorable Discharge with urgent mental health care or substance abuse problem. Service connected disability is not required. Assistance with locating treatment facilities and programs around the world can be found at: Findtreatment.samhsa.gov Although this is a free treatment, this along with other services has been a difficult sale to many of our veterans, especially the homeless population. ***VA Homeless Guy**

SUICIDE RESOURCES The Veterans Crisis Line is available for veteran and their families Toll free and confidential (numbers will be provided on last slide) Connects veterans/families and friends with qualified Dept. of VA responders Text messages can also be sent to receive free, confidential, support 24 hours, 7 days , 365 days a year. Text to: 838255. According to Dept. of VA website dtd 2017 there were 20 suicides daily. Out of the 20 at least 14 were not enrolled in the VA.
