Organ Systems

Integumentary System Major organs: skin, sense organs and glands of the skin Function: protection, excretion, and aids in regulating body temperature

Skeletal System Major organs: bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons Function: body support, protection of organs, provides levers for muscles to act on

Muscular System Major organs: all muscles attached to the skeleton, ex., biceps, triceps, Function: to contract or shorten to produce movement, generates heat

Nervous System Major organs: brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sense organs Function: to detect changes and respond

Endocrine System Major organs: Function: produces chemical pituitary, adrenal and thyroid glands; ovaries and testes, pancreas Function: produces chemical messengers to help maintain homeostasis

Circulatory System Major organs: heart, blood vessels, blood, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, spleen Function: transport system, protection against pathogens

Respiratory System Major organs: larynx, trachea, lungs Function: supplies blood with oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide

Digestive System Major organs: esophagus, stomach, liver small intestines, large intestines, Function: break down food

Urinary System Major organs: kidneys, ureters, bladder Function: rids the body of nitrogen containing wastes, maintains water balanace

Reproductive System Major organs: male: testes, vas deferens female: ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus Function: provides germ cells to perpetuate the species

anatomy: the study of the structure and shape of the body and body parts physiology: the study of how the body and its parts work or function

sample question: What body systems are involved when a soccer teammate kicks the ball to you during a game and you dribble it across the field and make a goal? (Explain how they are involved.)
