1 Ch 3.2 Interdependent Organ Systems

2 Interdependence of Organ Systems
Our organs do not work in isolation. While your lungs deliver oxygen to your blood, it takes blood vessels and a heart to move that oxygen to the muscle cells in your foot.

3 Organ Systems A group of two or more different organs that work together to perform one or more specific functions in the body.

4 Skeletal System made up of bones and cartilage
provides support for movement, attachment points for other tissues, and protection of other organs

5 Muscular System made up of skeletal muscles, tendons, and ligaments
enables you to move from place to place moves substances through the body (ie. swallowing food)

6 Circulatory System made up of the heart, blood vessels, and blood
delivers nutrients, moves gases, and removes waste products

7 Respiratory System made up of the nose, trachea, and lungs
allows oxygen from the air to enter the body and waste carbon dioxide to exit the body, in a process called respiration

8 Nervous System made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves
sends and receives nerve messages throughout the body controls behavior, movement, and processes such as digestion and circulation

9 Digestive System made up of the mouth, salivary glands, esophogus, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, small and large intestines, and the colon breaks food down so that nutrients can be absorbed by the blood and transported to all cells

10 Excretory System made up of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra
filters the blood and removes liquid waste and extra water from the body

11 Integumentary System made up of skin, hair, nails, and sweat glands
skin, hair, and nails cover and protect the body sweat glands help to maintain normal body temperature

12 Endocrine System made up of several glands that produce hormones, which are chemicals that regulate every bodily function pituitary, thyroid, and pancreas glands all produce hormones that carry messages to other parts of the body the hypothalamus gland, located in the brain, acts as a control center for the endocrine and nervous systems

13 Endocrine System

14 Lymphatic System made up of lymph, lymph nodes, lymph vessels, spleen, bone marrow, tonsils, and lymphoid tissue protects the body by destroying and removing any invading organisms and abnormal cells

15 Reproductive System made up of organs for producing offspring
