United States, Canada, and Mexico: Population and Culture North America United States, Canada, and Mexico: Population and Culture

United States From the nation’s beginnings, people from all over the world immigrated, or moved to the United States. The process of moving from one area to another is called migration.

USA: A Growing population Migration has shaped the culture of both large regions and specific places, like towns and cities. Examples: San Antonio (Mexican and Spanish Culture), New Braunfels (German Culture).

USA: A Growing population Cities growing from immigration: New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, and Houston. The United States also has considerable internal migration (people moving within the nation) In recent years, people have moved to cities from rural areas (*URBANIZATION*) What do you think are some pros and cons of Urbanization? Tokyo, Japan

USA: Population Density Today approximately 314 million people live in the United States. Nearly 83% of people live in urban areas. Population Density means the number of people per unit of land (people per square mile).

American Culture People new to the United States often bring aspects of their culture from their home country. Over time, immigrants have contributed their languages, religious beliefs, folk traditions, food, music, and art forms. While many cultures have influenced people in the United States, American culture has spread around the globe List 3 examples how American Culture has spread across the globe. 1. 2. 3.

Canada Canada’s population is a mix of indigenous people, descendants of people early colonizers from England and France, and immigrants from other countries. Canada is a multicultural society, meaning a society is made up of many cultures. Quality Question: What do you think are the pros and cons of multiculturalism?

Canada: Multiculturalism Supporters: Exposes people to new ideas and experiences. People may learn different languages and come to understand different cultures. Increases tolerance of different ethnic groups, races, and religions Critics: Emphasizes differences between ethnic groups. Does not encourage unity. Distinct cultural groups may lead to increased discrimination. Quality Question: Would you be a supporter or critic of a multiculturalist society?

Canada: A diverse Population Canada has many diverse groups, including English- and French-speakers, First Nations, Inuit, and immigrant groups from all over the world.

Canada: A diverse Population English-speaking Canadians experience society as its majority group. French-speaking Canadians form the majority in Quebec but a minority elsewhere. Inuit are a minority group in most of Canada, but a majority in the territory of Nunavut.
