“Stray” Open Book Study Guide Test Tuesday, 8/29/17

1. When she hugs the dog to her & says nothing.

2. Mrs. Lacey unwillingly gives up food because she doesn’t want to keep or feed the dog.

3. Children usually love pets-helps you predict Doris will love the dog.

4. They agree with her, but they still don’t want to keep the dog. It’s easier for them not to talk about it.

5. She wants Doris to stop crying, & accept the fact she can’t keep the dog.

6. 1. Mrs. Lacey tells Doris to act more grown up. 2. Doris hears her father drive away.

7a. Doris knows Mrs. Lacey won’t change her mind When Doris hears her dad leave, she’s positive the dog is going to the pound.

7b. We predict the dog will go to the pound. Ex.1. She knew her parents wouldn’t let her keep it.” Ex.2. You know we can’t afford a dog, Doris.”

8. She shows he’s a kind person who can’t leave the dog at the awful pound. The author waits to build tension in the plot.

9. She’s amused & surprised by her husband’s softhearted action.

10. Because the story suggests the dog will go to the pound. Parents state they can’t afford the dog. They ignore Doris when she praises dog.

Need to know A prediction is a logical guess about what will happen in a story. Use your prior knowledge to help you make predictions. Relate what you already know to the details in a story.
