PLOT AND CONFLICT

2 CONFLICT--The fuel of a Story
In a story, a conflict is a struggle between two opposing forces. (Ex: A knight must slay a dragon.) There are two types of conflicts: Internal External

3 External Conflict A struggle between the character and an outside force There are four different types of external conflict: Character vs. Character Character vs. Force of Nature Character vs. Society Character vs. Fate

4 Internal Conflict This kind of conflict takes place within a character’s own mind, as he or she deals with difficult thoughts, feelings, or decisions. Character vs. Self Character vs. Fate

5 PLOT Plot is the series of events in a story
Traditionally, there are five stages in a plot structure.

6 1. Exposition Exposition introduces the time, place, characters.

7 2. Rising Action The author introduces the obstacles, and builds conflict. Rising Action Initial Conflict- The rising action is triggered by an event called the initial conflict.

8 3. Climax The Climax is the turning point. At this point, the conflict is intense! Climax

9 4. Falling Action The author reveals the outcome, eases tension, and resolves conflict. Falling Action

10 5. Resolution The resolution reveals the final outcome and ties up loose ends. Resolution
