Contact with the Colleges: Make yourself known! Local College Fairs Campus Visits: Some schools will waive the application fee if you visit their school! On-Site Decision Days – Representatives from colleges will come to Brearley, meet with students individually, review all paperwork and make an instant decision! You walk out that day knowing you were accepted!!! Email/Call Admissions office with any questions or to check the status of your application

Official High School Transcript with GPA What does my counselor send to each College or University along with the application? College Essay (if needed) Official High School Transcript with GPA Teacher & Counselor Recommendation Letters

What is on a transcript? Grades: All final averages (4 Marking Periods plus the 2 Exams) Core, Honors, AP and ACE courses will also be designated on the transcript Senior mid-year and end of year grades will automatically be sent to every school you apply to We do not rank. Grade Point Average: GPA will be recalculated once all final grades are in for Junior year (this is the GPA that will be sent to all colleges in the Fall) Family Connection will be updated over the summer with new GPA’s Attendance for each school year is designated on the transcript

Write a rough draft and have someone review it! College Essay Some Colleges or Universities require general essays while some will require more specific essays. This is the part of the application that should demonstrate your personality, talents and creativity! Write a rough draft and have someone review it! Make corrections!

ACT SAT information can be found on www.CollegeBoard.org Includes Critical Reading, Math, and Writing sections Each section is worth 800 points Most schools are still only looking at the critical reading and math sections but some do look at the writing Practice tests and sample questions can be found on the website or in the counseling department For those students who are on free or reduced lunch, please see your counselor for SAT and ACT fee waivers. Teacher Recommendations Ask teachers whose classes you have performed exceptional in! If you know what you want to major in for college, ask a teacher in that related field for a recommendation Example: Science majors should ask Mr. Novak, Mr. Sona, Mr. Giordano etc… Courteously ask the teacher for a recommendation Fill out Student Brag Sheet on Family Connection Follow up with a formal written request through Family Connection Remember to THANK the teachers for taking the time to write you such a great recommendation!

Overview of Family Connection

What can Family Connection do? Research & compare colleges Keeps track of my GPA and SAT/ACT scores Looks at where you stand compared to other Brearley students who have applied to that college or university Sign up for college visits, college fair, on-site decision days Track your applications Lists all scholarships and has a the ability to search scholarships that fit your criteria Checklist- so you know exactly what you need to do at all times Parents can have their own log-in to see upcoming events, track their child’s progress and contact the counselor. Contains other helpful websites that may be helpful throughout the process

www.fafsa.ed.gov Financial Aid Financial Aid Night will be held in December 2014 Parents will be able to set up individual meetings with the financial aid representatives should they need help filling out the online application Online Application Only Apply as close to January 1, 2015 as possible…that is when the most $ is available!

Deadlines Be aware of deadlines!!! You must allow 10 school days to process your transcripts once you have given your counselor the email confirmation or application. Be aware of necessary supplements to the common application form or to the college’s application. Feel free to stop by the counseling department, request an appointment, email through Family Connection should you have any questions or problems throughout the process! We are here to help!
