Dual Enrollment/Harris County High School 2018-2019

What is Dual enrollment? Program that allows high school students to enroll in eligible universities and technical colleges during grades 9-12th Students earn credits at both the high school and college level Students may take any Academic or CTAE courses Students may enroll in a Program(Associate Degree, Diploma or Technical Certificate of Credit)

Purpose of Dual enrollment The purpose of the dual enrollment program is to remove financial barriers and simplify three programs into one. (Accel, HOPE Grant, MOWR) Expand dual enrollment opportunities for students Increase college access and completion

What is the Cost? No cost for the student No tuition cost No cost for books May be some associated fees Does not detract from the student’s HOPE hours (127 semester hours).

Dual Enrollment Eligibility Student must have and maintain satisfactory academic progress (3.0 GPA) Meet qualifying entrance exam scores (SAT/ACT/Accuplacer) Complete a DE participation agreement Complete a DE Application Apply to the college and meet admission requirements (Transcript/Lawful Presence/Immunization/AP Test Scores)

Dual Enrollment Guidelines Common HCHS guidelines: Seniors must take courses required for graduation in the first semester Six unexcused absences = loss of credit for the course Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA to participate Students are responsible for admission deadlines If a student fails a course at the college, that failing average is posted to their high school transcript and the student will be required to return to the high school for the next semester

more rules… Go to the college Dual Enrollment page Columbus State University Columbus Technical College GAfutures GADOE website Call the Admissions Office

Dual enrollment Deadlines HCHS deadlines are on the 1st day of the month prior to the beginning of the term of participation Fall – June 1st Spring – December 1st Summer – May 1st Students must have gained college acceptance by these dates to be considered

What about the weight? HCHS will add (.5) points to a student’s GPA in any MOWR course Making an “A” in a MOWR class would give students a 4.5 in that class instead of a 4.0 at HCHS GSFC will strip any additional local weight and add back (.5) points to MOWR courses up to a 4.0

Questions? Dual Enrollment Program Students earn high school and college credit at the same time There is no cost to the student and does not affect the students HOPE hours GSFC adds .5 points to students GPA as an incentive HCHS supports on and off campus options at local colleges
