HEA Fellowship Workshop Susan Bray, PFHEA Academic Developer (Professional Recognition) susan.bray@coventry.ac.uk https://acdev.coventry.domains

HEA Recognition Descriptor Typical Staff HEA Recognition 1 Early career researchers GTA Staff supporting learning Prof. Services staff with limited teaching Associate Fellow 2 Early career academics Staff with substantive T&L responsibilities Fellow 3 Experienced staff demonstrating impact and influence Subject mentors Senior Fellow 4 Highly experienced and / or senior staff with strategic leadership responsibility Principal Fellow

Is this the right route or category of fellowship for you? PgCert AP HE Should you be here? If you are on a full time academic contract and have been teaching in HE for less than three years, full time, you are required to register on the PgCert AP HE. Those who are on the PgCert AP HE will be awarded Fellowship automatically once they have successfully completed their qualification.

Senior Fellowship Senior Fellowship You  are eligible to apply for Senior Fellowship rather than Fellowship once you have been working in HE for approx. five years, full time, with approx. three years experience of leading staff learning.  This can be a portfolio of leading staff learning you don't have to have been in a specific role.

Lets get started some points to note: Check the Descriptor for your category of fellowship in the guide for your category of Fellowship. Here is the Descriptor requirements for D3 Reflection is over five years max for CUFPA!  Don't be tempted to go back over your whole career! Descriptor Requirement I. Successful engagement across all five Areas of Activity II. Appropriate knowledge and understanding across all aspects of Core Knowledge III. A commitment to all the Professional Values IV. Successful engagement in appropriate teaching practices related to the Areas of Activity V. Successful incorporation of subject and pedagogic research and/or scholarship within the above activities, as part of an integrated approach to academic practice VI. Successful engagement in continuing professional development in relation to teaching, learning, assessment and, where appropriate, related professional practices VII. Successful co-ordination, support, supervision, management and/or mentoring of others (whether individuals and/or teams) in relation to teaching and learning

UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) – Dimensions of practice Areas of activity (5) Core Knowledge (6) Professional Values (4) A1 Design and plan learning activities and/or programmes of study A2 Teach and/or support learning A3 Assess and give feedback to learners A4 Develop effective learning environments and approaches to student support and guidance A5 Engage in continuing professional development in subjects/disciplines and their pedagogy, incorporating research, scholarship and the evaluation of professional practices K1 The subject material K2 Appropriate methods for teaching and learning in the subject area and at the level of the academic programme K3 How students learn, both generally and within their subject/disciplinary area(s) K4 The use and value of appropriate learning technologies K5 Methods for evaluating the effectiveness of teaching K6 The implications of quality assurance and quality enhancement for academic and professional practice with a particular focus on teaching Professional Values V1 Respect individual learners and diverse learning communities V2 Promote participation in higher education and equality of opportunity for learners V3 Use evidence-informed approaches and the outcomes from research, scholarship and continuing professional development V4 Acknowledge the wider context in which higher education operates recognising the implications for professional practice

The Application Evidence that you are effective in supporting student learning (AFHEA) Evidence that you are an excellent classroom practitioner (FHEA) Evidence of successfully leading learning (SFHEA) What metrics/evidence/dates do you have? Impact! Dimensions underpin all that you do you can map them across to your application form

Senior Fellowship SFHEA – leadership section you must focus on the evidence of your influence on the teaching and learning practices of colleagues not students. Applications need to be critically reflective rather than descriptive.  What approaches have you tried. What is the rationale behind these decisions and how  do you know they have been successful? Leadership section – only cover leading staff learning in this section. Applications must be evidence based (referencing) CPD – how you apply the outcomes of your practice and how you know this has worked successfully!

Example of now to map your dimensions of Practice: This also helps to support students with learning disabilities (V1, K5). I always encourage academic staff to create an opportunity to enable students to receive both written and verbal feedback on their work, thereby providing an appropriate vehicle for different types of learners to benefit equally (V2). (V1,V2,K5)

Example of how to complete this section of the application form: Total years experience of teaching in HE.  FT/PT Open University at 0.5 for 10 years Coventry University - full time for 10 years Total F/T equivalent  15 years
