To receive external peer review of your teaching against an international set of standards To add to the suite of evidence about your teaching and students’ learning To integrate the range of evidence you already have about your teaching, curriculum innovations, and your students’ learning To support your ‘teaching’ case for promotion To join an international community of scholarly teachers (HEA Fellows around the world)

3 General information For both academic and professional staff
Invites you to shape a case about your L&T practice against a set of standards (the UK Professional Standards Framework) Not for elite university teachers/those breaking boundaries; it is intended to recognise everyday teaching and learning support practices The four categories of Fellowship recognise different engagements with L&T: from learning support (curriculum advisors, course quality officers, library support etc.), sessionals and classroom teaching, unit coordination and DAP roles, to strategic leadership of L&T at the institutional level, national impact and extending into the international arena.

Category Details of application Associate Fellowship (AFHEA) 1,400 word written application: Account of Professional Practice (reflective account across two Areas of Activity to meet Descriptor 1 UKPSF) Supporting statements from two referees Fellowship (FHEA) 3,000 word written application: Account of Professional Practice (reflective account across all five Areas of Activity to meet Descriptor 2 UKPSF) Senior Fellowship (SFHEA) 6,000 word written application: Account of Professional Practice (organised to meet Descriptor 3 UKPSF) comprising: - reflective of your practice - two case studies outlining your contribution to L&T in HE Principal Fellowship (PHEA) Suggested 7,000 word written application addressing: a record of educational impact a reflective account of practice three advocate statements

7 Descriptor 1: Associate Fellow

Early career researchers with some teaching responsibilities (e.g. PhD students, post-docs) Staff new to teaching (including part-time) Staff who support academic provision (eg learning technologists, learning advisors, library staff) Staff who undertake demonstrator / technician roles that incorporate some teaching responsibilities Experienced staff in relevant professional areas who may be new to teaching/ or supporting learning, or with a limited teaching portfolio

8 Descriptor 2: Fellow Who? Early career academics
Academic-related / support staff holding substantive teaching and learning responsibilities Experienced academics relatively new to HE Staff with (sometimes significant) teaching-only responsibilities (e.g. within work-based settings) Successful engagement across all five Areas of Activity Appropriate knowledge and understanding across all aspects of Core Knowledge A commitment to all Professional Values Successful engagement in appropriate teaching practices related to the Areas of Activity Successful incorporation of subject and pedagogical research and/or scholarship within the above activities, as part of an integrated approach to academic practice Successful engagement in continuing PD in relation to L&T and assessment and, where appropriate, related professional practices

9 Descriptor 3: Senior Fellow
Who? Experienced staff able to demonstrate impact and influence e.g. responsibility for leading, managing or organising programs, subjects or disciplinary areas Experienced subject mentors and staff who support those new to teaching Experienced staff with departmental/ or wider teaching and learning support advisory responsibilities within an institution Successful engagement across all five Areas of Activity Appropriate knowledge and understanding across all aspects of Core Knowledge A commitment to all Professional Values Successful engagement in appropriate teaching practices related to the Areas of Activity Successful incorporation of subject and pedagogical research and/or scholarship within the above activities, as part of an integrated approach to academic practice Successful engagement in continuing PD in relation to L&T and assessment and, where appropriate, related professional practices Successful coordination, support, supervision, management and/or mentoring of others (whether individuals and/or teams) in relation to L&T

10 Descriptor 4: Principal Fellow
Active commitment to and championing of all Dimensions of the Framework, through work with students and staff, and in institutional developments Successful strategic leadership to enhance student learning, with a particular, but not necessarily exclusive focus on enhancing teaching quality in institutional, and or inter(national) settings Establishing effective organisational policies and/or strategies for supporting and promoting others (eg, through mentoring, coaching in delivering high quality teaching and support for student learning Championing, within institutional and/or wider settings, an integrated approach to academic practice (incorporating for eg, teaching, learning, research, scholarship, administration) A sustained and successful commitment to, and engagement in continuing CPD related to academic, institutional and/or other professional practices Who? Highly experienced and/or senior staff with wide-ranging academic or academic-related strategic leadership responsibilities in connection with key aspects of teaching and supporting learning Staff responsible for institutional strategic leadership and policy making in the area of L&T Staff who have strategic impact and influence in relation to L&T that extends beyond their own institution

Read the paperwork to decide the category of Fellowship that you can make the best against: UK Professional Standards Framework (including Descriptors) Guidance notes for the appropriate Fellowship level Guidance notes for Referees Look at exemplars Register (free) with My Academy Craft your application, get feedback from colleagues, and organise your written references Submit your Fellowship application (+references/statements) via My Academy and pay the fee (1/2 price for WSU staff until July 2018) for assessment Wait for external assessment from an HEA accreditor Celebrate!!!!

Associate Fellow £100 (approx. $170 AUD) Fellow £200 (approx. $340 AUD) Senior Fellow £300 (approx. $510 AUD) Principal Fellow £500 (approx. $845 AUD) Schools may wish to offer the Scheme as part of their suite of professional learning opportunities for academic and professional staff.
