2 Professional Recognition and the Higher Education Academy The HEA provides a means of gaining professional recognition for your experience and practice The Professional Recognition Scheme enables you to reflect on your practice and present your approach to teaching, learning, assessment practices and pastoral responsibilities against a set of criteria aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework (PSF)

3 The UK Professional Standards Framework The HEAs Professional Recognition Scheme is aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UK PSF). The UK PSF consists of three Standard Descriptors (SD):which mirror typical practice roles and appropriate professional recognition by the HEA

4 3 Levels of Professional recognition Through the Academy's Professional Recognition scheme you can become an Associate, Fellow or Senior Fellow of the Academy. This is a portable asset that gives public recognition of your expertise and commitment to the student learning experience.

5 3 Levels of Professional recognition The Professional Recognition Scheme: confer post nominal letters.. Associate of the Higher Education Academy (AHEA) Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA)

6 AHEA Associate status is closely aligned to Standard Descriptor 1 (SD1) of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UK PSF). Practice Role – new HE /HE in FE teacher e.g. Teaching Fellow, Graduate Teaching Assistant, Demonstrator

7 SD1: AHEA Demonstrates an understanding of the student learning experience through engagement with at least two of the six areas of activity, appropriate core knowledge and professional values; the ability to engage in practices related to those areas of activity; the ability to incorporate research, scholarship and/or professional practice into those activities

9 FHEA Fellow status is closely aligned to Standard Descriptor 2 (SD2) of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UK PSF). Practice role – more experienced HE teachers, possibly including qualified HE teachers via Cert Ed, PGCE, Programme Managers

10 SD2: FHEA Demonstrates an understanding of the student learning experience through engagement with all areas of activity, core knowledge and professional values; the ability to engage in practices related to all areas of activity; the ability to incorporate research, scholarship and/or professional practice into those activities

12 SFHEA Senior Fellows are outstanding champions of teaching and learning, and act as change agents at national and international level. Senior Fellowship criteria are referenced to Standard Descriptor 3 (SD3) of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning in higher education (UK PSF). Senior Fellow status is conferred by the Senior Fellowship Committee

13 SD3: SFHEA Supports and promotes student learning in all areas of activity, core knowledge and professional values through mentoring and leading individuals and/or teams; incorporates research, scholarship and/or professional practice into those activities

15 When applying for Professional recognition you are required to provide evidence (500 words) against each of the following areas of activity (your practice!) 2 for AHEA all 6 for FHEA Areas of activity 1. Design and planning of learning activities and/or programmes of study 2. Teaching and/or supporting student learning 3. Assessment and giving feedback to learners 4. Developing effective environments and student support and guidance 5. Integration of scholarship, research and professional activities with teaching and supporting learning 6. Evaluation of practice and continuing professional development

16 Your evidence will also reflect.. Core Knowledge e.g. How students learn.. Professional Values e.g. Commitment to the development of learning communities You may be able to map such evidence against the requirements of local CPD Awards e.g. Exeter Universitys Learning & Teaching in Higher Education (LTHE) programme and associated assessment criteria fulfil the requirements of AHEA status
