430 a plague strikes Athens killing Pericles. 425 the Spartans lose at Pylos and Sphacteria, and Spartan hoplites are captured. 424 Athens aided a Messenian revolt. 424 Athens loses Amphipolis. 422 Athehns and Sparta lose their generals at Amphipolis. 421 the Athenian politician/general Nicias negotiates a peace with Sparta. Boeotia, Elis Megara, and Corinth do not sign the peace treaty. In Athens, Alcibiades now leads the pro-war movement.

After the expedition leaves he is convicted of sacrilege. Alcibiades, raised by Pericles and the most charismatic of Athenian politicians convinces Athens to sail against Syracuse in 415. his opponent Nicias is chosen to lead it with him. After the expedition leaves he is convicted of sacrilege.

Alcibiades runs to Sparta where he advises the Spartans on how to defeat the Athenians in Sicily. Alcibiades runs to Persia after sleeping with the Spartan king’s wife. Alcibiades runs back to Athens where is re-elected to lead the Athenians against Sparta. He is exiled again after his fleet was defeated at Notium in 406. In 405 the Athenian fleet was destroyed. Alcibiades dies in 404, and Athens loses the war.
