3 58.Summarize how the Persian wars affected Greece.

4 Persian War All of the Greek city-states united to defeat the Persian army. Spartans- Battle of Thermopylae Athenians- Battle of Marathon However, this did not unite them once the war was won.

5 59. Explain how Pericles instituted a direct democracy in Athens.

7 The Peloponnesian War Sparta vs. Athens

8 Athens Dominates Greek World
After the war against Persia the Greek world was dominated by Athens. Athens formed the Delian League Sparta formed the Peloponnesian League- In 431 B.C. warfare broke out between Athens and Sparta.

9 Sparta defeats Athens Athens had a powerful navy. Since Sparta was located inland it could not be attacked by the Athenian navy. Sparta’s foot soldiers could march to Athens. Eventually after 28 years of war Sparta captured Athens.

10 Greek Dominion Declines
After the Peloponnesian War, Greek power declined in the region. City-states constantly fought one another. While they were busy fighting a new power from the north, Macedonia, rose ready to conquer the world.
