Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers Objective: Learn to multiply fractions and mixed numbers.

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and the denominators To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and the denominators. Then simplify. Steps: First, if you have to multiply a whole number, write it over 1. Example: 2 as 2 1 2. Then, multiply the numerators. Third, multiply the denominators. 4. Simplify If your answer is improper convert it to a mixed number. Example 1: Example 2:

Your Examples:

When multiplying fractions, if the numerator and the denominator of either fraction have common factors, you can simplify before multiplying. 1 1 1 48 = 8 6

When Multiplying Mixed Numbers: 1 When Multiplying Mixed Numbers: 1. First convert the mixed number to an improper fraction. 2. Then multiply normally and simplify. 3. Convert the improper fraction back to a mixed number. 76 36 2 4 36 1 9 = = =

Homework: Multiply each fraction Homework: Multiply each fraction. Your answer must be a proper fraction in simplest form.
