Required Forms Physical Code of Conduct/Insurance Waiver (This is part of the physical form.) If student/athlete has participated in football, cross country, wrestling, volleyball, basketball, or cheerleading they are cleared to participate in track. No athlete may practice until their completed forms have been turned in to the office. NOT THE COACH.

Eligibility Anyone can start the season An “F” on the athletes grade card, issued on Friday March 8th, means the athlete is ineligible for the season. Weekly eligibility---No pass, no participation. Eligibility will be checked each Wednesday…on Friday the athlete will become ineligible for the coming week until they have a note from the teacher indicating that they are now passing. It is the athletes responsibility to get this note to the coach.

Do athletes go to all track meets? All eligible athletes will attend the first 4 track meets. Coaches will select teams for the last three meets of the season; the Eagle Relays, Eudora Invitational, and Frontier League meet. The Eagle Relays are a 7th and 8th grade combined meet with a limited number of entries. (1 boys PRMS team and 1 girls PRMS team) League meet and Eudora Invitational is limited to three participants in each event at each grade and gender level.

Practices Our first practice will be next Monday, March 4th, girls only. We will check out uniform/sweats after spring break. Students need to bring their own sweats as well as as well as shorts, t-shirt, and running shoes) The boys first practice will be Tuesday, March 5th . These two practices will allow us to show the athletes our daily workouts as well as go over season expectations.

Practices Our first full squad practice will be Wednesday March 6th. (weather permitting we will be outside) We will have 14 full squad practices before our first meet.

Practices Practices will begin at 3:30 sharp and end at 5:00. Rides should be here no later than 5:15. There may be days when groups of athletes (example: pole vault) may practice later than 5:00….you will be given notice a day or two in advance by a coach (through your athlete). Practice should NEVER go past 5:15 unless communicated. There will be no full squad practices over spring break or on the Friday preceding Spring Break (March 8th thru 17th).

Practices We would ask that the person who comes to pick up their student/athlete at the end of practice pull completely around the car loop and park in front of the entrance to the school (north side). Each car thereafter should park behind the lead car so that traffic doesn’t back up onto Kill Creek Road. (regular car loop procedure) Track athletes will be escorted to the car loop for pick up as a team (for safety) at the end of practice. Parents can also park in the parking lot to pick up their child. Please be very careful when driving in the parking lot.

Practices (continued) There will be a coach directing traffic as the athletes are being picked up. Please drive carefully as it will be very busy. Due to freezing temperatures, water is not provided outside on the track for several weeks at the beginning of the season. Athletes should bring their own water bottle to practice. Please have them marked with their name for easy identification.

Lettering Requirements Athletes will be expected to accomplish one of the following four requirements in order to receive a letter: Score a minimum of 6 points during the course of the season…..the league meet scores seven places 10-8-6-4-3-2-1……triangular meets score four places 5-3-2-1 (relays 5-3)

Lettering Requirements (cont.) Score at least one point at the League meet. Compete for two years in track and field. Finish the season in good standing, along with one of the 3 previously mentioned criteria…”finish in good standing” includes handing in all school issued equipment in the same condition as it was checked out and it should be laundered. A laundering fee of $1.00 per item will be charged for any unwashed clothing.

Expectations Be on time to practice every day. Track and field is to be treated in the same manner as all other sports at Pioneer Ridge. If you are in school you are expected to be at practice unless you are excused by your coach. Always compete…Give your best effort every practice and every meet. Athletes are encouraged to set a PR (Personal Record).

Expectations The final track meet of the season is the league track meet and it will be held on SATURDAY , May 4th at Baldwin/Baker University. If you know in advance that you will not be able to attend this meet because of a conflict, the coaches need to be notified as soon as possible (no later than April 20th). The league meet usually runs from 9:00 am to approximately 4:00 pm. Athletes will Leave PRMS at 7:30 am.

Expectations An athlete participating in several strenuous activities at the same time may be compromising his/her health. Track practices and meets should push an individual to their physical limits if they are training properly. The rest cycle during training is extremely important and should not be neglected. Injuries in running usually occur for several reasons. To mention a few: Overwork---too much training and racing for the feet and legs to handle. Faulty equipment---usually inadequate shoes. Mechanical problems---faults in running form. Failure to prepare---failure to prepare for running before the season starts, not warming up properly, and failing to stretch and “cool down” after training.

Clubs If a track team member is participating on a club team during the track season we expect the athlete to participate each day at practice and at each and every track meet. We ask that prospective track members show the courtesy of thinking through the conflicts and make a decision one way or the other as to whether or not they want to make the commitment of being on the track team. We would truly love to have all athletes out for track, but only if they are willing to make a true commitment to the track team.

Competition Procedures At the end of an away track meet if an athlete wants to ride home with his/her parents, the parent/guardian must sign the sign-out sheet. Failure to do so will result in consequences for the athlete. Our track managers will have a sign-out for the parent or guardian to sign (next to their child's name). We do ask that if the child leaves early they inform their coach that they are leaving, and not just sign out with the managers.

Track and Field Expenses Items provided: Team sweat pants/hooded top and meet uniform. These will be provided the week before the first track meet. Athletes will need to wear their own sweats up to that point. Gloves and a stocking cap are also advisable until mid- April. It is always best to have too much clothing rather than too little. Shorts and a t-shirt will be needed for all practices including those in the gym.

Track and Field Expenses Athletes should have a decent pair of running shoes, not basketball or wrestling shoes. Everyone will run every day at practice unless injured. (Throwers will have a specific workout independent from the runners). Spikes are not a necessity. Team warm up shirt (usually 15 – 20 dollars) Any other costs will be for an athlete’s food and water he/she brings to a track meet. If possible, athletes should try to bring their own food and drink to track meets and avoid junk food at the concession stand.
