What is cyber bullying? Cyber bullying is a form of indirect bullying but using technology or online. Cyber bullying is as bad and hurtful as any other form of bullying. This can include: sending bad messages on social media. (Facebook, snapchat, WhatsApp) Group chats online or through an app encouraging other people to post nasty comments about you. Being unkind when using online gaming chat Text messages on a mobile Prank calls Passing your number out to other people and encouraging them to be unpleasant to you Sending you insults or swearing at you using the chat facility on games. Sending you nasty voice or video messages.

Why people do it? Some people might do it for attention. Their parents use rude words and they think they can use the same words when talking to people. One of the main reasons people cyber bully is because they are getting bullied themselves and they take their anger out on other people. Some people do it because they feel like it gives them more power. They think it is a joke. They are pretending to be tough online. They can’t be seen

TOP TIPS If someone adds you as a friend on a game and you don’t know who it is you should ask an adult for their advice. If you are online and someone is bothering you and you find it disturbing, block them and delete them from your contacts. Play games for the right age group Make sure you can only hear and talk to and with your friends, not strangers. Treat others with respect and expect them to do the same to you. Report any cyberbullying, even if it’s not happening to you Never give passwords away. Never give personal information such as your age, your address or mobile number to anyone you don’t know in person.

What should you do? If you are in a group chat and your friends are being rude to someone, don’t just leave it as it could make you as bad as them. What you should do is tell them to stop it and leave the group chat. Make sure you don’t delete the message, keep it as evidence to show a trusted adult. If you are being cyber bullied , block the person who is bullying you or report them. Tell your parents or your teacher what is happening. Don’t reply to them − ignore them.
