1 Cyber Bullying Good Morning Children
This morning I am going to talk to you about cyber bullying which unfortunately is increasing and so I think it is important that you should all be aware of what it is and understand what to do if it starts happening to you.

2 Cyber Bullying You may know what bullying is, but do you know what cyber bullying is? O.K I think we all understand what is meant by bullying, do we? (If necessary do a quick Q & A to re-affirm what bullying is) But do you know what cyber bullying is? Can anyone tell me? Children should be encouraged to give answers containing keywords such as: Technology, Internet, mobile phone, text, message, nasty, intimidate, hurtful, social-networking, , chat, torment, threaten, children, strangers, gaming, image etc. Now, cyber bullying is not a nice subject, but you shouldn’t feel afraid because we are going to learn what we should do if it starts happening to us.

3 What is cyber bullying? Cyber bullying is the word used to describe the situation when somebody uses technology to be nasty or hurtful to you. To hurt someone, a cyber bully may use: Social networking sites Online gaming chat Texts on a mobile phone Well done! They were all very good answers. cyber bullying is the word used to describe when somebody uses technology to be nasty or hurtful to you. They could threaten, intimidate or humiliate you. Do you know what those words mean? (Perform a quick Q & A to ensure the children understand the terms) (Click) The difference between bullying and cyber bullying is that to hurt someone a cyber bully may use, for example: (CLICK) Social-networking sites, Online gaming chat, or Text over a mobile phone. Another difference between bullying and cyber bullying is that a cyber bully can contact you anywhere via your mobile phone or through your home computer via or social-networking sites where as a bully may only harass you at school.

4 Cyber bullying on social networking sites
Cyber bullies can hurt their victims in a number of ways on social networking sites by: Posting nasty comments or sending threatening private messages. Setting up a ‘hate group’ about you and encouraging other people to post nasty comments about you. Lets look at the ways cyber bullies can hurt their victims. One way is using social-networking sites and they could do this by: (CLICK) Posting nasty comments or by sending you threatening private messages. They could set up, what is called a hate group about you and get other people to post nasty comments about you. Do you all know what I mean by this? (Q & A if necessary) They could post a nasty poll about you and get people to vote on, for instance, what horrible name they should call you etc.

5 Cyber bullying on mobile phones
Cyber bullies can torment their victims using mobile phones by: Sending unpleasant or nasty texts that call you names or threaten you. Making prank calls or silent calls to you on your mobile phone. Passing your number around to other people and getting them to send you unpleasant texts. Another way that cyber bullies can torment you is by your mobile phone. They do this by for example: (CLICK) Sending unpleasant or nasty texts calling you names or threatening you. They make stupid prank calls or silent calls to you on your mobile phone. They will sometimes pass your number around to other people and get them to send unpleasant texts.

6 Cyber bullying on online games
Cyber bullying takes place within online games in the following ways: Sending you insults or swearing at you using the chat facility on games. Sending you nasty voice or video messages. Stealing your password and then pretending to be you on the game. Getting a large group of gamers to gang up on you within the game. Now, let’s look a cyber bullying on online games. cyber bullying is increasing on online games because it is not just children who play them, there are also teenagers and adult who don’t necessarily behave appropriately online. cyber bullying takes place within online games in the following ways: (CLICK) Sometimes cyber bullies will send you insults or swearing at you using the chat facility on games. They can also send you a nasty or intimidating voice or video message. They can sometimes hack or steal your password and then go online pretending to be you and they wind other players up who then react badly towards you. They get a large group of gamers to gang up on you within the game.

7 Why do people cyber bully?
People cyber bully for lots of reasons. It makes them feel powerful or they think it will make them look cool in front of their friends. They are pretending to be tough online. They think that it’s just a joke. They want to get back at you for upsetting a friend of theirs. Because they can! You maybe asking yourself why cyber bullies do what they do and that is a very good question. People cyber bully for lots of different reasons including: (CLICK) It makes them feel powerful or they think it will make them appear cool in front of their friends. Because they don’t appear tough in-person they pretend to do it online. They don’t understand the hurt that they are causing because they think that it’s just a big joke. You may have upset one of their friends (you might not even know that you have) and they want to get back at you. It maybe just because they can! Purely because the technology makes it so simple to contact people they cyber bully for the ‘heck’ of it!

8 How to prevent yourself from being cyber bullied
Treat others with respect and expect them to do the same to you. Never give passwords away. Never give personal information such as your age, your address or mobile number to anyone you don’t know in person. Never arrange to meet anyone you’ve met online in person. If you don’t want the world to know then don’t post it online! Before we look at what you do if someone has already started cyber bullying you, let’s look at what you can do to prevent yourself getting cyber bullied in the first place. To prevent yourself getting cyber bullied there are a number of things you can do, such as: (CLICK) Always treat others with respect and expect them to give you the same respect back. Never, ever give your passwords out online or to your friends. They are yours and yours only!!!! Never give personal information such as your age, your address or mobile number to anyone you don’t know in person. Never arrange to meet anyone you’ve met online in person. They may have told you that they are a boy/girl the same age as you but how do you know????? If you don’t want the world to know something about you or that has happened to you, DON’T post it online! If you want to sign up to play online games it is best to use a separate ‘Hotmail’ or ‘Gmail’ address so that if someone starts bullying you within the game you can just close that account down.

9 What to do if you are being cyber bullied
If someone starts cyber bullying you, there are a number of things you must do: Tell your parents or your teacher what is happening. If they are not your friend, don’t reply to them − ignore them. If you are being cyber bullied through your mobile phone, social network or s keep the messages and show them to your parents or your teacher. If you can block them or delete the account that they are contacting you on, then do it, but remember to show your teacher or parent the messages first! If someone starts to cyber bully you in someway, there are a number of things you need to do: (CLICK) The very most important thing you must do if you’re being both cyber bullied or real-life bullied for that matter, is tell someone such as your parents or a teacher. If you need support in telling an adult, ask a friend to go with you just in case you get upset. If someone starts cyber bullying you remember, they are not your friend so don’t reply to them. Ignore them all together and usually, if they are not getting a response they will get bored and stop. If you are being cyber bullied through your mobile phone, social network or s keep the messages and show them to your parents or your teacher. If you can, block the cyber bully or delete your account that they are contacting you on, but remember to store the messages so that you can show your parents or a teacher – you can delete them after they have seen them.

10 Cyber bullying – Remember!
Make sure you know how to protect yourself against getting cyber bullied. Make sure you know what to do if you are cyber bullied. Always get help if someone starts bullying you. Lastly, don’t be afraid of the bullies! That’s what they want. Unfortunately, as communicating through technology becomes easier, it also becomes easier to cyber bully and sadly cyber bullying is on the increase, especially within online games. If, however, you know what to do to prevent yourself from getting cyber bullied and what to do if it starts happening to you, you can remain safe and enjoy using technology. (CLICK) cyber bullying (or any type of bullying for that matter) is not tolerated in school and anyone caught bullying someone will be in a lot of trouble. Make sure you know how to prevent yourself getting cyber bullied. Make sure you know what to do if someone starts cyber bullying you. There is a well-known saying that ‘knowledge is power’ and if you know how to both prevent and how to deal with cyber bullies then it is you that is powerful and not them. Lastly, don’t be afraid of the bullies, that’s what they want you to be. Always tell someone if someone starts bullying you.
