American Foreign Policy How will the U.S. deal with other countries?

How did the U.S. settle disputes with Great Britain? Questions/Main Ideas Rush-Bagot Agreement – limited the naval power on the Great Lakes for both the U.S. and British Canada Conventions of 1818 – gave the U.S. fishing rights and set the border between the U.S. and Canada at 49 degrees latitude. How did the U.S. get Florida? Questions/Main Ideas Notes The U.S. had a dispute over the southern border with Spanish Florida. There were also problems w/ the Seminole Indians. They were helping runaway slaves and attacking U.S. settlements. In 1818 General Andrew Jackson invaded Florida to capture Seminole raiders. Started the 1st Seminole War. Jackson took over most of Spain’s important military posts and overthrew the governor of Florida. Adams-Onis Treaty- Spain gave East Florida to the U.S. How did the U.S. get Florida?

What’s happening in Latin America? Questions/Main Ideas Notes Many Latin American countries were fighting for independence from Spain. This reminded many Americans of the American Revolution. In 1821 Mexico declared its independence from Spain. Pres. James Monroe feared that rival European countries would try to invade. So issued the Monroe Doctrine What’s happening in Latin America?

Questions/Main Ideas Notes What was the Monroe Doctrine? 1-The U.S. would not interfere in the affairs of European countries. 2-U.S. would recognize and not interfere w/ European colonies that already existed in North and South America. 3. The Western Hemisphere was off limits to future colonization by any foreign power. 4- Any attempt to colonize would be considered an act of hostility.
