2 Election of 1816 James Madison is going to retire – Served 2 terms as POTUS Election of 1816 – James Monroe Secretary of State for Madison – Rufus King Rich politician James Monroe wins – Becomes 5 th POTUS

3 First Issue for Pres. Monroe What are the borders for America? Since Britain got to keep Canada – Where do we draw the definitive line between our 2 countries? – Convention of 1818 US and Canada agree that the border will be drawn at 49 th parallel – Goes to Atlantic Ocean » North = Canada » South = USA

4 What about our border with Spanish Florida? 1818 – Sec. of State John Quincy Adams Sent to Spanish Florida to work out a treaty to let American settlers move in – Problem: Pres. Monroe told Gen. Andrew Jackson to protect the settlers – Keep Indians from attacking – Along with Spanish – So, what do you think happens?

5 First Seminole War Gen. Andy Jackson – Decides to go into Florida to eliminate the problem: Attacks Seminole Indians in Florida Also attacks Spanish military bases – Kicks out governor of Florida! So, what can Spain do now with Florida if we have control of it?

6 Treaty of Adams – Onis (1819) Spain agrees to give USA Florida for: – $5 million – Rights to area South of Red River What later becomes Texas Then, Spain runs into problems with their territory in New World….

7 Rise of Nationalism Spanish colonies in Central and South America are wanting to become independent nations!! – Called nationalism Desire to become own nation because it is better than what you are now. All they need is a leader: – Simon Bolivar Aka La Liberator!!

8 Bolivar Leads Revolutions By 1822 – Bolivar had liberated: Venezuela Colombia Peru Ecuador Panama Pres. Monroe believed other European nations would take over these new countries Make them colonies How can you stop this?

9 Monroe Doctrine Dec. 2, 1823 – Pres. Monroe announced to the world in Monroe Doctrine: Foreign powers can not create new colonies in North or South America – If they do, we will declare war on you! – America is letting the world know » The Western Hemisphere is off limits!

10 Review Questions Who becomes the 5 th POTUS? Who is his Secretary of State? Who is Simon Bolivar? What is the Monroe Doctrine?
