The American System *Henry Clay -believed that creating a strong national economy would set the U.S apart from everybody * American System- plan to make the U.S self-sufficient. Improvements to roads, canals, bridges. This would help economy & transportation *Some people said no ! --- Govt. “did not” have power to spend money on roads & bridges Henry Clay, “The Great Compromiser”

The Cumberland Road- the first road built by the “federal govt.” Also called the National Road. Designed to make transportation easier and improve economy/trade/business.

*Also part of Henry Clay’s (American System) Plan to improve water transportation Erie Canal- ran from Albany to Buffalo (NY) U.S business –economy would benefit from improved transportation and trade.

Peace, pride, prosperity Good times after the War of 1812 ! New roads, canals, transportation Supreme Court rulings strengthen the power of the “Federal Govt.” McCullough vs. Maryland (1819)- Supreme Court said Congress “did” have the “power” to create a National Bank !

24 Missouri Compromise (1820)
end of the “Era of Good Feelings”  Sectionalism– disagreements between people from different regions of the U.S Missouri Compromise--- Missouri applies for statehood. They disrupt the balance of 11 free states & 11 slave states in the U.S.

25 Missouri Compromise of Missouri a slave state and Maine as a Free state. Slavery prohibited North of the 36’ 30’

26 The Tallmadge Amendment
All slaves born in Missouri after the territory became a state would be freed at the age of 25. Passed by the House, not in the Senate. The North controlled the House, and the South had enough power to block it in the Senate.

27 The Monroe Doctrine, 1823 * Referred to as “America’s Self-Defense Doctrine” *(1821)- America recognizes independence of Spain’s Latin America colonies * President Monroe fearful that the colonies would be taken over again, issued this warning: *“the western hemisphere is closed to European colonization” *“the U.S. will not get involved in European affairs”.
