2. Convention Line of 1818
Disagreement over boundary of the US & British Canada
Neither side wants a war again
Decision to make the 49th parallel

3. Rush-Bagot Agreement - 1817
After War 1812 – military warships were left on the Great Lakes
British & US governments decided to limit warships on the Great Lakes to avoid any “war-like attitudes”

4. Adams-Onis Treaty Slaves in Georgia – fled to Florida
Creek/Seminoles – raided Georgia
1818 – Monroe send in Jackson to attack Seminoles - angered Spanish

5. Spain did not want to fight the US
Spain was trying to control their colonies in Central & South America
Spain sold parts of Florida to the US for $5 million

6. Established the official western border of the US as the Rocky Mountains and the southern border as the 42nd parallel
US promised to leave Texas alone (“foreshadowing”!!) and not try to claim it

7. Monroe Doctrine
Spanish & French colonies were trying to gain their own independence in Latin America
Examples:
Colombia (1819) – Simon Bolivar led independence revolt
Argentina (1816) – Jose de San Martin

8. Most of Latin America was independent by 1825
Mexico (1811) – Miguel Hidalgo (priest) organized independence revolt; set up gov’t that outlawed slavery; returned land to Natives; captured and executed
Jose Morelos (priest) organized fight for equal rights and land given back to peasants but was captured
Brazil (1821)
Most of Latin America was independent by 1825
Russia was controlling areas in the north (Canada)

9. Fear of European interference in North & South America
Monroe sent out a “warning” to all European nations.
“Leave us alone and we will leave you alone!”

10. It stated:
US wouldn’t interfere in affairs of European nations or European colonies in the Americas.
In return, US warned European nations not to interfere with newly independent nations of Latin America.
Declared US would oppose any new European colonies in the Americas.

11. Britain (our new found ally) backed the Doctrine 100%!
US did not have a large enough military force to support these claims but Britain helped and fully supported the US.
