Presentation transcript:

IB is the most rigorous curriculum offered in High School.   IB is the most rigorous curriculum offered in High School. Even strong students can struggle. That’s why Lamar has resources in place. But where to begin? Who can help? That’s the topic of tonight’s Parent Ed presentation:  What to do when your student struggles?

How do you know if your student is struggling? Your student may tell you. You may notice a change in behavior. You might suspect something is wrong if you are monitoring your student’s academic progress and see that grades are falling.

How can you monitor your student’s academic progress How can you monitor your student’s academic progress? Gradespeed HUB Report cards

The HUB There is no parent log in Student log in is student’s school ID number & birthdate

What is the HUB ? Why the HUB ? Learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of educational courses or training programs. Why the HUB ? The HUB allows students 24-7 access to instructional material, coursework, and digital textbooks from any device and will give them a voice and choice in their learning and in how they demonstrate mastery of a subject. Students have a safe space for independent learning, options to submit homework and projects, the ability to collaborate and communicate with their classmates, and the ability to reflect on and take ownership of their learning through blogs, discussion boards, and ePortfolios.

If the struggle is academic, your first contact is to email the teacher for a parent/teacher conference. The purpose of the conference is to find out what the teacher is seeing in class and get the teacher’s suggestions about how you can best support your student from home. Ask the teacher to show you how to monitor your student on the HUB and Gradespeed. Monitor your student’s progress and follow up with the teacher as necessary.

  ATTENDANCE

ATTENDANCE & CONSEQUENCES OF FAILURE TO ATTEND CLASS The state of Texas requires that students attend 90% of scheduled class meetings. If attend less than 90%, and absences are unexcused* = NG for excessive absences. 90% means in Fall semester: may have 3 unexcused absences (UEA), the 4th triggers an NG. 90% means in Spring semester: may have 4 UEA, the 5th triggers an NG. If NG, student must retake the entire course in SS or grad lab to recover the lost credit. Unless, student qualifies for Credit Appeal (CA). To qualify for CA: student attended at least 75% of the time parent provides the missing note(s) – no more than 3 committee of teachers agrees to offer CA NOTE: Single period absences will always be denied Credit Appeal! CA is offered once, at the end of each semester, for the previous semester only. *Excused absences do not count against the student. Be aware, parent may write only 3 notes to excuse absences. Any additional notes must come from doctor, dentist, courtroom proceeding . . .

But what if the struggle is not academic, or is not only academic But what if the struggle is not academic, or is not only academic? What if the struggle is Social/Emotional?

The Lamar Success Center CIS’ goal is to build relationships with the students, so that they feel safe telling the team members if they are worried about another student, or struggling themselves. “They know they have someone safe to go to, and then we can support that student. These are growing, developing kids. We can encounter awful times to make us have awful thoughts. We are here for them.” CIS offers academic tutoring in the Student Service Center, Monday through Thursday. SBEGGS@houstonisd.org What is the program? To assist students and their families with needs ranging from academic, to social and behavioral issues, to drug counseling and much more. We engage experts in the community to meet the needs of the student. Who is eligible? Any student at Lamar and their family. atello@houstonisd.org
