Reflexive Verbs Ch. 2A

Reflexive Verbs Used to say someone does something to or for themselves Ex: washing your hands, brushing your teeth The person doing the action is also receiving the action

Reflexive Verbs If the verb’s infinitive form ends in “se”, it is a reflexive verb Ex: ducharse cepillarse

Reflexive pronouns The reflexive pronouns are: me, te, se, nos, os me nos te os se se

Remember… The present tense endings: -AR -ER -IR o amos o emos o imos As áis es éis es ís A an e en e en

Example: Me ducho Nos duchamos Te duchas Os ducháis Se ducha Se duchan ***The pronoun and conjugated verb have to match***

Reflexive vs. Non reflexive Some verbs can have a reflexive and non reflexive form It is non reflexive if the action is being done to or for someone/something else EX: Yo lavo el coche (I wash the car) Me lavo las manos (I wash my hands)

Non-Reflexive: Reflexive: Marta cepilla el perro. Marco se cepilla. Marta = Subject Perro = direct object Marta performs action, but the dog receives it. Marco = Subject Marco = direct object Marco performs action, and he receives it.

Reflexive verbs When you use reflexive verbs with BODY PARTS or CLOTHING Use the definite article (not the possessive adjective) Ex: ¿Te pintas las uñas?  Do you paint your nails? Felipe se pone los zapatos  Felipe puts on his shoes

Position The reflexive pronoun can be in front of the conjugated verb or attached to an infinitive Ex: Me voy a duchar. Voy a ducharme. (the pronoun stills needs to reflect who is receiving the action)

Verbs and Prepositions If a verb immediately follows a preposition, it must be left in its infinitive form (even if it’s not in English) Ex: Me lavo la cara antes de acostarme. I wash my face before I go to bed. Common prepositions: Por, para, de, antes de, despues de

Los Negativos To make a reflexive negative, add a “no” before the pronoun. ¿No te lavas las manos? Ellos no se cepillan el pelo.

Linking words- adverbios del orden Primero, segundo, tercero, cuarto, quinto, sexto, séptimo, octavo, noveno, décimo, etc. Luego- later, then Entonces- then Después – then Después de - after Antes(de)- before Por fin, por último, finalmente,al final- finally Cuando- when Pronto- soon
