Reflexive verbs are used to tell that a person does something to or for him- or herself.

There are 2 Parts to the Verb 1. a reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nos, se) 2. and a verb form

5. Reflexive Verbs
In English, we really don’t identify with reflexive verbs. So these will seem strange to you

6. Reflexive Verbs English Examples… I wash my hands
You take a shower (shower yourself)
Juan gets dressed (dresses himself)

You must remember that these are actions being done to oneself, by oneself!

8. Reflexive Pronouns nos (to or for ourselves) me (to or for myself)
os (to or for you all)
se (to or for themselves, you all, or each
other)
me (to or for myself)
te (to or for yourself)
se (to or for himself, herself, itself)

9. TO WASH ONESELF I wash myself You wash yourself
He, She, It washes himself, etc.
We wash ourselves
They wash themselves

10. Reflexive Verbs
You must remember that the reflexive pronoun goes before the conjugated verb!

11. Step 2: Change the pronoun to agree with the subject
I bathe myself.
Step 1: Take off the “se”
bañarse
Step 2: Change the pronoun to agree with the subject
I bathe (myself) = me

12. Step 3: Put the reflexive pronoun IN FRONT of the verb
I bathe myself.
Step 3: Put the reflexive pronoun IN FRONT of the verb
bañar me

13. Me baño. bañar me I bathe (myself) = I bathe myself.
Step 3: Put the reflexive pronoun IN FRONT of the verb
bañar me
Step 4: Conjugate the Verb in the Correct Tense!
I bathe (myself) =
Me baño.

18. Reflexive Verbs
When using reflexive verbs to talk about parts of the body, use the definite article (the el, la, los, las that mean “the”)
You DO NOT use possessive adjectives when using reflexives!

19. Reflexive Verbs I wash my hands. Me lavo mis manos. Me lavo las manos.
I already know they are my hands because it’s reflexive! If they were anyone else's hands the verb would NOT be reflexive!
