1 Los verbos reflexivos Reflexive Verbs P.R48

2 Verbos Reflexivos In English, a verb is reflexive when the subject and object are the same. I wash myself. Subject: I Verb: wash Object: myself Since the subject and object are referring to the same person, “wash” is reflexive.

3 Verbos Reflexivos The following is not a reflexive verb:
I wash the car. Subject: I Verb: wash Object: the car Since the subject and object are not the same, “wash” is not reflective in this case.

4 Verbos Reflexivos Here’s another example of how a verb can be either reflexive or non reflexive. I scratch myself. Subject: I Verb: scratch Object: myself Subject & object are the same, so verb is reflexive. I scratch the dog. Subject: I Verb: scratch Object: the dog Subject & object are NOT the same, so verb is NOT reflexive.

5 Verbos Reflexivos In English a reflexive verb means adding “self.”
Example: myself, yourself, herself, ourselves. In Spanish, a reflexive verb means adding “se” to infinitive. Example: llamarse (to call oneself) lavarse (to wash oneself)

6 Verbos Reflexivos Many verbs can be either reflexive or non-reflexive.
Lavar - to wash (non-reflexive) Lavarse - to wash oneself (reflexive) Rascar - to scratch (non-reflexive) Rascarse - to scratch oneself (reflexive)

7 Verbos Reflexivos There is a reflexive verb that you’ve ALREADY been using. Llamarse - to call oneself Me llamo Felicia. Literally - I call myself Felicia. Best translation - My name is Felicia.

8 Verbos Reflexivos At the beginning of Spanish 1, you learned to conjugate regular ar/er/ir verbs. You used subject pronouns (yo, tú, él, ella.....) Yo lavo Nosotros lavamos Tú lavas Vosotros laváis Él Ella lava Usted Ellos Ellas lavan Ustedes

9 Verbos Reflexivos To conjugate a reflexive verb, you need to know reflexive pronouns. Me myself Nos ourselves Te yourself Os yourselves Se himself herself yourself Se themselves

10 Verbos Reflexivos These go BEFORE the verb, the verb is conjugated, and the “se” is dropped. Think of the “se” as a place-holder for the correct reflexive pronoun that you will use. Example: Juan se lava la cara. Juan washes his face. (reflexive) Juan is washing himself - his face is the specific body part that is receiving the action.

11 Verbos Reflexivos The conjugation of a reflexive verb looks like this:
Lavarse (to wash oneself) Me lavo Nos lavamos Te lavas Os laváis Se lava Se lavan

12 Verbos Reflexivos Examples: Juan se lava la cara.
Juan washes his face. (reflexive) Juan lava su carro. Juan washes his car. (non-reflexive) *Note: when referring to body parts, use the definite article, so it’s “la cara” not “su cara.”

13 Verbos Reflexivos More Examples:
¿Qué te compras? What do you buy yourself? Me lavo el pie I wash my foot. Nos respetamos We respect ourselves. Se llama Eva She calls herself Eva. (Her name is Eva) Me baño en la mañana I bathe myself in the morning.

14 ¡Práctica! Traduzca las frases a español:
Jorge bathes himself. (bañarse) Ricardo brushes his hair. (peinarse) Raúl gets up at 7:00. (levantarse)

15 ¡Práctica! Traduzca las frases a inglés: Malena se lava la cara.
Leandra se cepilla los dientes. Adreonna se peina el pelo. Ella se llama Isabela. Tú te bañas cada día.
