WEHS Advanced Academics Night AP (Advanced Placement) I ♥ AP Calculus December 17, 2018

What is AP? AP stands for Advanced Placement. These courses are created through College Board. College Board also develops PSAT and SAT exams. AP courses give students the chance to tackle college-level work while they’re still in high school. Each AP course has an exam offered in May. Students must register and pay for this exam. College credit may be awarded by earning a score of 3 or higher on the AP exam. The exams are scored 1-5.

AP Exam Most exams are 2-3 hours long. The 1st part of the exam usually consists of multiple-choice questions. This part of the exam is scored on the number of questions answered correctly on a bubble sheet. You won’t receive or lose points for incorrect answers or unanswered questions. The 2nd part of the exam usually consists of free-response questions. This part of the exam could be an essay, a solution to a problem, or a spoken response. In most cases, you’ll be writing your response in the exam booklet. Not all exams are pencil and paper. AP Studio Art students submit portfolios of their work for review. AP Spanish, French & Music Theory have listening and speaking parts.

AP Capstone AP Capstone is a diploma program that gives you the chance to tackle the type of in-depth, long-term research assignments you’ll do in college. It’s based on two yearlong courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, which are meant to supplement other AP courses you can take anytime in high school. AP Seminar, which students generally take in the 11th grade, helps you develop analytic, collaboration, and presentation skills. This course is a prerequisite for AP Research, in which you’ll design, conduct, present, and defend a research-based investigation on an issue you’re interested in. This issue could be related to topics you’ve studied in other, subject-specific AP courses or topics outside of school that interest you. The AP Capstone program gives you the chance to develop college-level academic skills and dig deep into subjects you love. It also gives you the chance to distinguish yourself to colleges through the skills and awards described above. https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-capstone/higher-education-endorsement https://youtu.be/yPsQvn6NaLE
