MEASURING MATTER

MASS MASS is the amount of matter in an object Metric Unit = grams (g), kilograms (kg), or milligrams (mg) Measured on a balance or scale The more matter that is in an object, the more mass it has.

MASS vs WEIGHT WEIGHT refers to the force that gravity exerts on a MASS (the pull of gravity). Think about riding in a roller coaster or on an elevator going up or down… Does your mass change? NO Then why does it feel like your weight changes? The roller coaster/elevator changes the way your body is being pulled down.

VOLUME VOLUME is the amount of space a substance takes up. Metric unit = Liters (L), milliliters (mL), or cubic centimeters (cm3) Measured by: mathematical equation Graduated cylinder water displacement

DENSITY DENSITY is a measure of how closely packed the atoms are in a substance higher density = closer particles lower density = more space between particles Density will change as a substance is heated or cooled
