1 Mass, Volume, and Understanding Density

2 What is the difference between mass and volume?
Mass: the amount of matter in an object Can be measured directly in various units (kilograms, grams, milligrams, etc. Can also be measured indirectly Eg: mass of water = (mass of container + water) – mass of the container

3 What is the difference between mass and volume?
Volume: is measuring the amount of space that is occupied by matter Eg: using a graduated cylinder to measure the volume of water The mass of the water may be 30 g, but the volume is 20 ml.

4 Density Ever wonder why oil floats on top of water?
If you have 1 liter of oil and 1 liter of water, the oil has a lighter mass so it floats on the water. When you are comparing masses and volumes, the scientific term for this is density

5 Density Density is calculated by this formula:
Density = mass The units are g/mL volume We compare all densities to the density of water, which is 1.0 g/mL Substances with a density more than 1.0 g/ml SINK, while substances with a density less than 1.0 g/ml FLOAT

6 Brain Buster What is the density of copper if it weighs 892 grams and has a volume of 100 milliliters? What is the density of oil if it weighs 86 grams and has a volume of 100 milliliters? Which substance has the higher density? Which substance will float in water? Which one will sink?
