Sexually transmitted diseases FACTS AND MYTHS

Myth or Fact #1… A person can get STDs only if he or she has lots of sexual experiences. Myth… It can happen the first time #2… STDs can easily be cleared up with antibiotics. Myth… Some are incurable and last a lifetime On a scrap piece of paper, have students take this short little “quiz”.Myth #2 A lot of Gonorrhea strains are becoming resistant to antibiotics.

#3… If a person has an STD, he or she would have symptoms of the disease. Myth… In some cases, especially early on, no symptoms are present #4… Once the symptoms of an STD go away, the disease is cured. Myth… STDs can still be present without symptoms

# 5… A person can have only one type of STD at a time. Myth… Possible to have multiple infections # 6… Once infected with an STD, a person cannot get it again. Myth… There is no immunity, a person can become re-infected

# 7… A vaccine can prevent the spread of STDs. Myth… Vaccines only exist for viral hepatitis, and HPV (genital warts) # 8… Having a Pap test (swabbing the cervix) is one way a female can find out if she has an STD. Myth… Pap tests detect cancer cells, not the presence of an STD Pap Smears only test for cervical cancer, not STD’s. There are many different tests for the many STD’s.

A few statistics…  Each year, one in four teens contracts an STD.  More than half of all people will have an STD at some point in their lifetime.  Each year, one in four teens contracts an STD.  Of the diagnosed STDs, only some (Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Hepatitis A and B) are required to be reported to state health departments and the CDC. STD’s are definitely under reported.

STD defined Sexually transmitted disease (STD): caused by pathogens transmitted from an infected person to an uninfected person during intimate contact. They can be in blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUFkaeXyPGI&list=PLWjAc0r4BZX5yqHhSXcukHPFsAT4Rqu2q&index=23

Many STDs can spread through any type of sexual activity Many STDs can spread through any type of sexual activity. This includes skin-to-skin contact and oral sex. This means that people who have not yet had sexual intercourse can still get STDs…

According to the CDC, STD rates have increased for the 4th year in a row

ABSTINENCE FROM SEX AND A MONOGAMOUS MARRIAGE ARE THE BEST PROTECTIONS AGAINST STDS. ***Abstinence is deciding NOT to have sex or intimate contact (penis, vagina, anus, mouth) until marriage. *** Monogamous is only having one partner for life.

Pathogens are what causes a disease or illness. Virus:   viral infections are challenging to treat, primarily because viruses are relatively tiny and reproduce inside cells. Antibiotics do NOT affect viruses and can not help cure the viruses. All you can do is treat the symptoms. 2. Bacteria: most bacterial diseases can be treated with antibiotics, although many strains of bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics because of over use. There are a number of pathogens. The two most common are viruses and bacteria.
