Long Beach City College Office of Student Life Viking Volunteer Orientation

Program Requirements: How to get Started The Viking Volunteer Program is open to all current Long Beach City College students. In order to participate and record service hours with the center, students must meet the following requirements: Be enrolled in at least 3 units of college course work (unless otherwise approved by the Volunteer Coordinator) Carry and maintain at least a 2.0 G.P.A for college level course work (Term/Cumulative) Complete a Viking Volunteer Application Packet(each semester)

Acceptable Service Definition of Acceptable Service: All volunteer service must be done for others at no charge and must be nonpartisan. In order to qualify, activities coordinated by a religious institution (church, synagogue, or mosque) must provide service to the general community. Responsibilities related to membership in a religious institution are not acceptable as service. Unacceptable places for volunteer service: Volunteer work at a private office (such as a law firm or doctor’s office), working for an elected official, working for a political campaign, singing in the church choir, participating in religious education, baby-sitting in the church nursery, teaching religious doctrine, are not acceptable Volunteer Activities. Acceptable service activities: Assisting with food and clothing drives, working at soup kitchens, providing community-wide day care.

Two Types of Volunteer Service As a Viking Volunteer, students can participate and record their service hours under various campus and community service programs.

Community Service Community Service: Providing quality volunteer service to the community at large. This type of service works to meet actual community needs that are coordinated in collaboration with the school and community.

Examples of Community Service Viking Volunteer Service Projects Mentoring tutoring volunteering at hospitals/hospice centers, participating in a charity Walk/Run (AIDS Walk) Elementary/College Tour Guide Crisis Centers Shelters Food Pantry/Food Bank. When in doubt ask! 

Campus Service Campus Service: Providing quality volunteer service to the campus. This type of service works to meet actual campus needs that are coordinated in collaboration with the Office of Student Life, Associated Student Body, and various LBCC departments/ programs.

Examples of Leadership and Campus Service Attendance at ASB/Cultural Affairs/Senate/Club Board/Council/Intramural/Student Life Committee meetings Assistance at campus events/activities Coordinating of campus events/activities Assistance at Office of Student Life departments (Information Desk, Viking Volunteer Resource Center, Student Activities, Men and Women’s Resource Center, Intramural and Recreational Sports).

Donation Drives Donation Drives: Service hours will also be granted by participation in Viking Volunteer Resource Center sponsored donation drives. Service hour breakdown for items/money will be determined by the Volunteer Coordinator.

How to Record Service Hours Students who meet the program requirements are eligible to record service hours with the Viking Volunteer Center. Students will provide a record of service through: Volunteer Timesheets OrgSync.com

and How do I record my hours? Timesheets: All students must submit a time sheet to the volunteer center for service hour verification. Timesheets are available at the Volunteer Center. and OrgSync.com – online data system Students must also keep an online record of service as well.

Get Registered with OrgSync: Go to OrgSync.com Select “Register” Find Long Beach City College and Click “Register” Complete your Account Information Complete your Profile Information   http://www.orgsync.com 2. Join Viking Volunteers Spring 2010 Once you are logged in: Select “Join an Org” (upper left hand corner of your screen) Under “My Communities” Select “LBCC Organizations” Type in “Viking Volunteers” in search field Select “Join” Enter password: service 3. Inputting your Service Hours:  Select “Tools”- on left hand side of your screen Select “Time Sheet” Complete “New Time Sheet Entry”

Recording Your Hours on OrgSync New Timesheet Entry/ Example Organization: Full name of the organization you are volunteering at. Description: Include a detailed description of duties performed EX: Jackson Elementary School- Tutored students in math and reading Total Hours: If you are volunteering more than one day at the same organization, please include total number of hours for entire semester. If you are volunteering just one day, put total number of hours for that date. Start Date and End Date: If you are volunteering more than one day at the same organization, please include the First Date you began your volunteer service (Start Date), and the Last Date of your volunteer service (End Date). If you volunteered only one day, please include the day of service as Start and End Date. You have the option to have your supervisor “sign –off” on your hard copy timesheet, or you can fill out the information below on your OrgSync Timesheet to have them verify your hours online. You must do one or the other. Reference Name: Supervisor Full Name (cannot be a student, relative, or family member) Reference Title: Supervisor Title Reference Email Address: Supervisor Email ** Students who do not have their hours approved online, must submit a Timesheet with service hour information, and Supervisors Signature.

Service Hour Deadlines Service hours must be submitted at the deadline indicated by the Volunteer Center. Service hours not submitted or verified by these dates will not be accepted! This includes online verification of hours. NO EXCEPTIONS!

IMPORTANT! Hours will not be granted or recorded with the Volunteer Center, unless a Volunteer Application has been submitted prior to service. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Awards and Honors The Viking Volunteer Resource Center at Long Beach City College offers students a variety of awards and honors for their hard work and service to the campus and community. Students must apply and record service hours with the Viking Volunteer Resource Center each semester, to be eligible for the following.   Permanent Record of Service: Volunteers who record 30 or more hours during a semester will have number of service hours reflected on their Academic Transcript. Students will also be provided with a Co-Curricular Transcript at the end of the semester. The Co-Curricular Transcript will highlight each student’s service to both the campus and community. Co- Curricular Transcripts will be issued upon request.    The President’s Volunteer Service Award: The President’s Volunteer Service Award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation on behalf of the President of the United States to recognize volunteers across the nation. Awards vary by age and hours of service completed within at 12-month period (summer to spring). The Presidential Award is presented at the Spring Volunteer Banquet, upon verification of service hours. Young Adults (15-25) Bronze: 100-174 hours Silver: 175-249 hours Gold: 250+ hours Adults (26 and up) Bronze: 100-249 hours Silver: 250-499 hours Gold: 500+ hours

Awards and Honors The following awards are presented to volunteers who record service hours with the Volunteer Center each semester.   Certificate: 30 to 49.5 hours Bronze Medallion: 50 to 74.5 hours Silver Medallion: 75 to 99.5 hours Gold Medallion: 100 to 199.5 hours Philanthropic Award: 200 + hours Nordic Award: This award is presented to the volunteer who records the highest number of service hours each semester. The volunteer must meet eligibility requirements to qualify for this award. Mother Teresa Inspiration Award: This award is presented to the Club, volunteer, or program who performed the most outstanding service project for the semester. Norseman Award: This award is presented to a volunteer from a men’s social service club who records the most hours for the semester. Blaine Mansfield Award: This award is presented to the Independent male volunteer who records the most service hours for the semester. Mattie Paine Silver Bowl: This award is presented to the female in a women’s social service club that records the most service hours for the semester. Mary McMillian Silver Bowl : This award is presented to the Independent female who records the most service hours for the semester. Student must meet eligibility requirements to qualify for this award.
