ALLITERATION Example: “Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers” Repetition of the same or similar consonant sounds in words that are close together

ONOMATOPOEIA Use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning Example:

PERSONIFICATION Type of metaphor in which a nonhuman thing or quality is talked about as if it were human Example: talking trees

SIMILE Figure of speech that makes a comparison between two seemingly unlike things by using a connective word such as like, as, than, or resembles Looking at all the wonderful cuisines listed in the menu, he felt as hungry as a lion.

SYMBOLISM The use of a person, place, thing, or event that stands both for itself and for something beyond itself. Example: Flag stands for freedom.

TRAGEDY Play, novel, or other narrative, depicting serious and important events, in which the main character comes to an unhappy ending (related term: tragic flaw) Example:

Connotation Fat Obese Plump The thought association brought on by a word or phrase.

Description How words are used to represent a picture or to create a mind picture. Words “paint a picture in our minds.”

Dialogue Two or more characters talking in a work of literature.

Diction Author’s style of using words; word choice.

Juxtaposition The arrangement of two or more ideas, characters, actions, setting, phrases or words side by side or in similar narrative moments. Used for the purpose of comparison, contrast, rhetorical effect, suspense, or character development.

Imagery Figurative words used in a work to create mental pictures.

Irony Incongruity between what is expected to be and what actually is or a situation or result of the incongruity.

METAPHOR Figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things without using a connective word such as like, as, than, or resembles (can be direct, implied, extended, or mixed) Example: "I can mingle with the stars, and throw a party on Mars; I am a prisoner locked up behind Xanax bars." (Lil Wayne, "I Feel Like Dying")

Metaphor – Another example Comparing two things saying that one is the other. You are my honey.

Synesthesia A process by which one sense modality is described or characterized in terms of another, such as “a bright sound” or a quite color.”

Tone The attitude expressed by the style and overall presentation of a piece of writing, and reflected mainly through syntax and diction. This is a purposeful decision by the author.

Voice Voice is associated with the basic vision of a writer, her general attitude toward the world.
