YEAR 11 PREPARING FOR PPE November 12th – 22nd

Why are the PPE important? o PPE are vital for practice; just as actors need a stage rehearsal before the real performance, so you need practice under the conditions that you’re going to experience next summer o PPE test your knowledge and let you and your teachers know which topics are your strongest and your weakest. You (and they) can then plan revision based on giving more time to your weakest areas o It will help you in the real exams. Your GCSE exams might seem a long way away, but if you revise thoroughly now, you will be amazed at how quickly and easily you will remember things when you revise a second time. o For subjects that are tiered, this will act as a ‘test run’ – you will not be able to enter for the Higher Tier in the summer unless you prove you can perform well in the PPE.

PPE Preparation: you need to be able to answer all these questions for every subject you are taking – test yourself and a partner. How many exam papers will you get for each subject? How long will each paper last? Do you have to do all of the questions, or is there a choice? Do you know which topics you could be tested on in each subject? How many minutes do you get per mark? Have you seen examples of the type of questions you will get? Do the questions require short answers, or longer paragraphs? Have you seen a copy of the syllabus for each subject you are taking? Is your exam split between higher and foundation, and which are you doing?

How does it work? What Level? What it means… Level 1 – working to the best of my ability Opportunities for Praise and Rewards! Celebration Day Ball Level 2 – working reasonably well, but some areas that need to be improved in order to fulfil potential Specific targets agreed to work on – shared with parents, monitored by tutor / Head of House Will need to meet further targets before getting Ball ticket. Level 3 – at risk of underachieving and/or affecting achievement of others Report Card – report to Senior member of staff linked to your House every day Need to be off Level 3 to attend Celebration Day

What does it really mean? When students collect their exam results they will be able to say “I could not have tried any harder “ ( at least for the last few months) When students collect their exam results they will be more likely to have achieved their target grades. When students collect their exam results it will mean they have more choice over what they can do next.

What determines my Level? Levels based on: Effort Behaviour for Learning Attendance/ Punctuality Homework completion Teacher input about current effort (including completion of Controlled Assessment & Homework) Levels are NOT based on ‘attainment’ Points system

For Students on Level 1 Well done –you’re doing really well! Keep the ‘balance’ right - it’s a marathon, not a sprint! Look after yourself. Don’t stop doing other things (sport, music etc.) Make sure that you remain as Level 1 Rewards

Students on Level 2 Generally working pretty well in most areas. Some concerns about Effort Behaviour for learning Attendance / punctuality Homework / Controlled Assessment completion To move to level 1 students have to complete up to 3 targets in areas of concern – Teacher / House Head / Tutor to confirm (as well as showing general improvement) Remember , you can go down as well as up! Will be able to go to the Celebration Day Will not be able to go to the Ball unless you move up to Level 1 by the end of the process.

For students on Level 3 Awarded for one (or more) of the following: Effort concerns Significant Behaviour concerns (affecting other students’ learning) Not meeting deadlines in Homework / Controlled Assessment Significant punctuality and/or attendance concerns To move to Level 2 students have to show a clear improvement in the areas of concern Daily / Weekly monitoring with report card(by Senior member of staff) You will not be able go to the Celebration Day or the Ball unless you move up to Level 2 and then Level 1 Most will get there – but there is NO guarantee

Communication with students Achievement System Launch Thursday 18th October - general intro to system Initial level assemblies - November At end of each window – 3 separate launch assemblies for students on the 3 levels to ‘personalise’ the message Individual mentoring/target setting from subject teachers, tutors, YLM, LG.

Communication with parents October – intro email to parents – common to all Presentation evening 18th October Before half term, levels letter.
