Bike Safety Before you ride If on the road Put on your helmet!!!!! Dress to be seen. Inspect your bike. Repair if needed. Check your tires to make sure they have enough air. Make your feet touch the ground when straddling the top bar. Avoid wearing headphones. Check for day light, ride during the day when it is safest. If on the road Always ride with your hands on the handlebars. Always stop and check for traffic in both directions when entering street. Cross at intersections. Ride on the right-hand side of the street. Never ride against traffic. Use bike lanes or designated bike routes when possible. Don't ride too close to parked cars. Doors can open suddenly. Stop at all stop signs and obey traffic (red) lights. Ride single-file on the street with friends. When passing other bikers or people, always pass to their left side, and call out "On your left!" so they know that you are coming. Adapted from www.nemours.org
