1.STOP 2.LOOK – left, right & left AGAIN! 3.LISTEN Careful when stepping out from between parked cars! TAKE OFF THOSE HEADPHONES! YOU CAN’T HEAR WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND YOU!

STOP WALK Start walking when you see the “man” walking on the sign. NEVER RUN – you could trip & fall! WALK YOUR BIKE in the crosswalk too! If the red hand starts flashing while you are in the crosswalk…don’t worry…just keep walking at a normal pace! DON’T RUN! You have plenty of time! USE Crosswalks when available. Drivers EXPECT to see you there!

When you are riding your BIKE…you should always ride in the SAME DIRECTION AS TRAFFIC! If there is no sidewalk where you are WALKING… you should always walk in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF TRAFFIC (against it). SEE THE DIFFERENCE?! OK! LISTEN UP…

It is very important that your bike works the right way EVERY time you ride it! CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOUR TIRES HAVE AIR IN THEM! DOES THE WHEEL STOP WHEN YOU USE THE BRAKE? IS ANYTHING STUCK IN THE CHAIN? DOES IT MOVE SMOOTHLY?

REMEMBER THIS RULE: There should be a HELMET ON YOUR HEAD if you have WHEELS AT YOUR FEET! IF YOU’RE UNDER 18 YEARS OLD YOU MUST WEAR A HELMET PUT IT ON RIGHT EYES EARS MOUTH When you look UP…you should be able to see your helmet! The strap should form a “V” around your ear. The strap should be loose enough so you can talk…but tight enough so you feel it when you open your mouth wide! IF YOUR HELMET IS DAMAGED YOU MUST GET A NEW ONE!

Quick Review

Walking and Biking to School  Rules of the Road – Know how to follow the rules and be safe while walking and biking to school.  Equipment Check – How to make sure your equipment is safe.  Benefits – What are the benefits of walking and biking to and from school.

Sidewalks and Crosswalks  Students are permitted to ride on the sidewalk.  Students should only cross major roadways at designated crosswalks.  When crossing a roadway you should stop, look, and listen.  Be sure to look right, left, and right again for vehicles.

Roadways and Intersections  When possible walkers should walk in the direction facing traffic.  When possible riders should ride in the direction with the flow of traffic.  Only cross a major roadway at traffic signals and stop signs.

Signs and Signals  Be sure to identify and know the signs along your route. These signs typically inform the drivers, riders, and walkers how to be safe and avoid conflicts. Typical signs include:  Be sure to learn your hand signals if riding to and from school.

Safe Routes to School  Walk or ride with your parent to know your route.  Walk in groups (like the MOVE it! Clubs).  Avoid strangers.

Equipment Check – ABCQWS (Any Bike Can Quickly Work Safely)  A is for Air Pressure  B is for Brakes  C is for Chain  Q is for Quick Release  W is for Wheels and Tires  S is for Sight and Visibility (for walkers too)

Helmet Check  Eyes – Can you see the edge of your helmet when you look up?  You should have about two fingers of space between your eyebrows and the bottom of your helmet.  Ears – Do the straps meet under your ear lobes to form a V?  The front and back straps are equally tight and meet at a “V” just below your ear.  The helmet is level on your head.  Mouth – Is the strap loose enough so you can talk, but tight enough so you feel the helmet pull down when you open your mouth wide?  The chin strap is tight when you open your mouth. There is space for one finger between the chin strap and chin when your mouth is closed.

Benefits  Physical activity from walking and biking to school:  Builds healthy children including fighting obesity, increased attention span, life-long habits.  Builds healthy communities by reducing pollution, increasing safety, and encouraging neighborhood relationships.
