New GCSE Grades

The English Baccalaureate The EBacc is a performance measure introduced into school league tables in 2011. It is not a qualification in itself but it shows how students have achieved across a core of academic subjects – English, Mathematics, two Sciences, History or Geography and a Modern Foreign Language.

Progress 8 Progress 8 is a performance measure introduced into school league tables in 2016. The measure shows how much progress students have made in a range of subjects including the EBacc subjects and up to 3 others. This is also not a qualification in itself; but in the future it may become a simple way for employers and education providers to judge candidates.

? Old Government measure to assess school performance 5 x GCSEs at C or above including English and Maths New Progress 8 Score EBacc Score English and Maths at Grade 5 and above. Employers and Further Education providers 5 x GCSEs at C or above including English and Maths New ?

Sixth Form Requirements Need to achieve a minimum of five grade 9 - 5 including English + Maths. Prospectus details individual subject requirements. Grade 6 in the chosen subjects. e.g. Maths or French: Grade 6 or above. Ask your teachers for their advice.

A level and beyond The choice of A Level subjects should be based around interest & enjoyment of the subject, ability to do well in the subject and what is needed for a specific degree. However, ‘selecting’ universities such as those in the Russell Group and 1994 Group are highly competitive, demand high grades and have preferred subjects. The Russell Group has produced a document, Informed Choices, giving advice about choosing A Level subjects for entry to one of its institutions. A synopsis of ‘facilitating’ subjects is below:- English Maths Physics Chemistry Biology Geography History Languages
