Removing Ink

Question What solvents will remove ink best?

purpose The purpose of this project is to determine what chemicals will remove ink out of cloth. It is important because if you drop some ink on your shirt you can remove it.

hypothesis We hypnotize that hair spray will remove ink.

Procedure

MATERIALS Vinegar, water , alcohol, hair spray, Wisk , and 250 mL cups.

variables Manipulated/Independent: Different solvents Responding/Dependent: How much ink is removed

Direction 1. Trace a quarter on 5 cloth squares. 2. Color in the circles with ink. 3. Fill a cup with 125 mL of water. 4. Fill a cup with 125 mL of vinegar. 5. Fill a cup with 125 mL of Wisk. 6. Fill a cup with 125 mL of alcohol. 7. Place one cloth square in each cup. 8. Soak cloth 24 hours. 9. Remove cloth from cup. 10. Rate amount of how much ink is on the cloth using rating scale 0 to 10 with 0 being where no ink is removed an 10 ink is completely removed. 11. Repeat steps 1 through 10 for four more trials.

CONCLUSION Our hypothesis was incorrect. Water worked the best to take the ink out of the cloth. Water’s average 6.2.
