Reasons for Imperialism USH-5.1

I. Imperialism Expansion to new territories to seek raw materials and new markets Making empires Pres. Washington said to steer clear of alliances We had followed the idea of isolationism since then Keep out of the world’s affairs By end of 1800s, economy not so small anymore Need resources and markets

I. Imperialism US had already spread westward Those new areas were settled by Americans Intended to make them regular states Even Alaska, bought in 1862, became a state in 1958 William Seward These new territories were never meant to become states Were to be used for raw materials and new markets

II. Reasons to spread Capitalism meant a need for resources and markets Surplus of goods needed to be sold somewhere Increased demand for American crops too

II. Reasons to spread Nationalism spreads in America Proud to be an American… Expanded navy to: Compete with imperialist countries Protect trade Secure markets Spread Christianity

II. Reasons to spread Social Darwinism One group is more fit to survive Americans are superior to other people Especially non-white people US has the responsibility to expand to help those people get better “White Man’s Burden” The same thinking as “positive good”

II. Reasons to spread Wants to be a world power Looks at European countries and is jealous Uses the situations in Latin America to step up
